Hi All,
I am getting rid of my 11 year old Freelander shortly and I will be looking for a Td4 Automatic. Can you tell me what model or year has the BMW engine as I hear they are very good? I would appreciate any help in deciding what engine would be best. I prefer Diesel but would have petrol if the enging was the 2000cc one. I look forward to hearing from you and finding out what you all think.

Thanks!
Dick. (Edinburgh)

The freelander1 td4 has the BMW engine in it. Don't worry about the year aslong as it is a td4. Not the freelander2 TD4 though.
The petrol engine is a 1.8 or the V6. They are both rubbish.

If you are going for a TD4 auto go for the facelift model 2003 to 2006.
The changes included bigger brakes, which the auto really needs.
I'm with howardo on this one steer clear of the petrol ones at all costs, the 1.8 is fragile, and the V6 drinks like a school of fish.

Thanks Andy and Howardo for the info. I know I can count on the Landy crew and do apprecaite your thoughts.

I have had an 04 TD4 for about 4 years and have had no real problems with the car at all.
I can recommend the TD4 as a great powerplant and if you also fit a Synergy 2 module, you will have wonderful car.

I have a pre-facelift td4 auto (53 plate), and it drives and stops fine, I have no issues with it at all, and happily takes all the work related abuse I give with no problems.
