Hi all,
First post on here!
Looking to return to a Freelander (previously had one and have recently sold our Disco 3) and have spotted one locally that might be worth a punt....the inhibitor switch (xyz sensor??) is apparently duff. What is the process for bypassing this to get the Hippo home (this was done by AA to get currently owner to local garage) so I can check out the sensor/connectors/shift cable adjustment etc and then replace the switch if needed? Being auto towing is not an option, even though it is less than 10 miles away & don't really want to pay to transport it if it can be avoided.

Thanks all

A Freelander 1 has a simple gear selection switch. If it's not starting in P or N, then it could be one of the barrel connectors loose or corroded.
If you just want to start the engine. Then a simple jumper lead from the battery + terminal and the starter trigger terminal will do the trick to start it. ;)

However if the gear selection switch is duff, you won't be able to select any gears.

On a slightly different note. A FL1 takes some getting used to after running a D3 for a while. I went back to a FL1 from a D3 a couple of years ago. I still miss the D3 to drive but don't miss it's constant thirst for parts.

Great thanks, was wondering if there was a more subtle way of bypassing the switch...route 1 is proably a lot easier!

It actually depends what the problem is and how easy it is to locate. You need to do some testing with the ignition on. The gear selection lights should work without the engine actually running. If they don't show which gear has been selected, then moving it will be a problem.
What year, miles and model is the car.

Problem is it won't start in P or N (has been temperamental for a few weeks but "wiggling gear lever" solved the issue - now won't start at all) ....everything else is ok, once it is started all drives fine (apparently). I just want to get it started to give it a double check and to get it home.
It is 2003, 5 door, 110k

In that case, just jump the starter by applying battery voltage to the starter solenoid trigger wire. This can be done at the relay, or directly to the starter. The thin Red/White wire is the wire that needs to go live, for the starter to operate. ;)

Have a look at the selection arm and cable, if it's out of line the display may be showing P or N but may not be in that position. You could move it about slightly whilst someone tries to start the car, this would confirm or eliminate this.

Code reader that's compatible with the autobox.
Was it the Lynx. I know the Delphi will, but that's ££££.
Sorry for any confusion:confused:
Mike

The garage machines seem to be fine as far as I know. Snap on, lynx and the Delphi all have access to the TCM.
The Icarsoft doesn't access the TCM at all, but does access other modules except the CCU. Interestingly my ELM327 with Torque does read some TCM codes, but not other's. I suspect it's reading TCM codes that the EDC is seeing on the CAN.
