I have been looking at getting a new battery before the winter comes along,
I have narrowed the choice down to;;

Bosch S5 Car Battery Type 096 | eBay

Bosch/Varta S5 Car Battery Type 096 5 Year Guarantee | eBay

The Bosh starts at £81.25

12V
Capacity - 77Ah
CCA (EN) - 780A
278L
175W
190H

The E454 Varta starts at £76.98

12 Volts
Capacity - 77 Ah
CCA - 780 A
278L
175W
190H

OEM Battery Spec is,
12 Volts
Capacity - 72/74 Ah
CCA - 680 A
278L
175W
190H

Will the extra 3-4 Ah or the extra 100 CCA be a problem??
I have a new(ish) alternator 150A,

any advice would be appreciated..

Hi, I've had a Bosch S4 008 (74 Ah/680 cranking amps) fitted which has a 4 year warranty. I don't know if its equal/inferior/superior to the stock batteries fitted to a MK1 Freelander.

It looks less powerful than the one you've listed.

There's a thread about winter batteries here, one member who I know is very knowledgeable posted a link to an 800 cranking amps product.

I ended up getting one of these.

VARTA *SILVER* F18 (019)

Will fit when needed, as the old one is holding its own for now..

Great advice all round..

My issue turned out to be the Alternator, (replaced under warranty):D
so I know the battery is OK for now..:)
I may need to use this new battery for my other car come the cold weather

Hi All,

I've just fitted a new battery this afternoon. I think the standard size is a 096, which is what my old battery was. I noticed that the battery tray was quite a bit wider than the old battery. After reading a previous post and measuring to check I ordered a 110 size battery. It's a much better fit as it's nice and snug in the battery tray and shouldn't be able to come loose or move around.

The battery btw was a Varta Blue F17 from batterymegauk on ebay. £68.95 inc next day courier delivery. Very reasonable in my opinion. The 110 size was a tad more expensive than the 096 at £62.95, but the extra size gives 740cca as opposed to 680cca. There are better batteries such as the F18 varta silver which gives 800cca for another £10.

Just for those who are unaware you generally want to go for as large a cca as you can afford. In laymans terms Cold Crank Amps are the strength of the kick if you like, which is what is needed as diesels are harder to start due to the fuel igniting under compression rather than by spark as in a petrol. AH, or Amp Hours is the capacity of the battery, and is generally not so important in a car engine battery, but would be of more use if powering lights etc in a caravan. These are normally known as leisure batteries.

Hope this of help to people.
