Hi there,

A two weeks ago i did notice that my idle is a bit shaky, but nothing happened until 3 days ago when my Freelander TD4 '03 suddenly start chocking and stall in slow traffic. Changed fuel filter and fuel pump, as filter wasn't changed for last 6 years I think. I'm thinking of replacing cam sensor and boost pressure sensor. Last the time I did EGR mod whole manifold was caked so cleaned it out (sensor too but it look clean inside). I did notice that inlet manifold looks a bit strange: on the edges, where they joining two half's of the inlet, are some gaps between two parts, but I don't know how far they are or if they are leaking.
You can start engine in cold or hot, its working normally for 15-20 minutes then you can see idle slowly start to move and if you give a few good revs it will start to work irregular and stall eventually.
After you can try to start - it won't. Give a hour and its back again.

Any ideas cos this is puzzling me and I need my car to work and I this scenario I can't even drive to petrol station next door..
Any ideas more then welcome ;-)

PS. Forgot to add: When you switch on AC it will kill the engine very quickly, but maybe just because of strain on the engine?

check that the air filter is clean.
could be your fuel injectors need cleaning or replacing.
could be timing belt/chain issues.

I'm running on X-tra diesel for last month to keep injectors clean but...
TD4 has chain and i think if this was off timing would be strait from a point of start as well as starting issue itself.

but to make sure will check K&N filter (I don't think it done more that 8000 miles)

anyway thanks

I think I found a problem... Roverron I am going to kill you :D:D:D Disconnected Synergy 2 module and everything went back to normal (aka Slowlander), nothing happened, didn't stall any more... even with AC unit on. Need to test it again tomorrow, on longer run, but for now stationery it's fine. Time to go to work...

Lesson for the future: Check your add-ons as they may be at fault as well.

... and I have new fuel pomp BOSH :D:D:D

You could check the suspect areas by covering with soapy water and watch for bubbles when you rev the engine to get some manifold pressure

After you can try to start - it won't. Give a hour and its back again.
Suggested checks.....
fuel pressure sensor and it's wiring
camshaft and/or crankshaft position sensor or wiring.

As Chaser says, the cam & crank sensors are prime failure fodder. Poor Greenie spent months chasing his cause both sensors had failed at the same time. Also, if the Synergy box turns out to be ok it might be an injector or two. Seem to remember someone once posting that they had an injector problem which seemed to be cured by them switching off their Synergy box only for it to reappear a couple of months later. Apparently because the box "works the injectors" a little harder, faults are magnified & can seem to go when the box is switched off, though they will resurface down the line.

Thanks guys

chromiumuk:
Switching off Synergy2 only did not cured the problem, I had to completely disconnect whole box from my car in order to work it properly. That why I did assumed Synergy2 being at fault. I will test the injectors at some point, for now I have to sent the box to Roverron and see what he will say.

I'm going now for small spin to see if it's ok without synergy, thanks guys again.

You've done the right thing sending off the box as it sounds like it's developed a fault if you had to disconnect completely. Keep using plenty of injector cleaner like Millers powersport 4 diesel additive at double the recommended dose to keep injectors clean even after you've sorted your trouble.

Double? Come on...:D you wanna blow all me gaskets?:D:D:D

I'm testing for last 3 days and definitely it was Synergy2. My "slowlander" is driving like a tank thanks to Pierburg MAF :p but at least is "driving". Now all those small 1.1 or 1.4s are "big macho" cos they can be quicker at start... but we will see next week :D My 1600Kg of live steel (and plastic :) will burn their as***es ;););)

Remember to let us know how things go & all the best. Know what you mean about the 1.1's, either I'm getting slower or they're getting quicker as the years go by. My synergy'd auto just about sees them off but not all of them.

Whoa... Whole week passed and I have to say: "Slowlander" is getting me on the edge of my nerves :) Ron... come on... I. Need. Synergy!!!
Until now my car is stable, so awaiting delivery from Ron.

PS. They are getting faster... but me gets bigger ;) I'm thinking about changing my TD4 onto L200 or Hilux '05 (new design). Back of my car is like an animal world (as I have some garden rubbish to transport sometimes); full of spiders and their cobwebs ;)))) Pick-up would be ideal for engineer/handyman type of jobs.

OK.... Ladies and Gentleman :welcome2:

Got back Synergy2 from Ron and just installed on the car...

Vrooom... 1.6es I'm coming ;):D:D

I still have to do rolling test, but for now, after 1h of idle and some over 3500 revs, it's fine. Ron said that there was a part of them with loose wire problem on the 3-pin plug. Now is sorted. I think ;)

The new Synergy2 doesn't have old No. 10 Setting with Low MAF and Very High Power, but he's saying that no. 5 and no. 10 with Low MAF and High Power should be near that. We will see :)
