TD4 aircon bearings advice

Hi all, went to Bala a month or so ago and when I got back home there was a horrible grinding noise coming from the drivers side of the engine. After some research, I found out it was coming from the aircon tensioner pully and the spinny bit on the aircon pump. I have taken the aircon pump off as I went on a trip to scotland (ended up doing 1700 ish miles, only thing that went wrong was the turbo intercooler pipe) and i thought that doing loads of miles with this horrible noise wasnt good. I am now looking into changing the bearings on the aircon pump. Any ideas? I have phoned a few aircon specialist and they all say new air con pump. I think that it should be possible to pull the flywheel? off the pump and change the bearings.

Has anyone had similar problems or managed to solve this.

I am sure you have checked this already, but just in case...

did you try running it with the lower engine tray off ? the only reason I ask is sometimes the side cover, which is flimsy plastic gets dislodged and rubs on the lower pulley causing a horrible grinding noise...

The aircon clutch/pulley assy is not part of the pump itself. If you remove the centre bolt the clutch assy can be removed (collect the small shim behind) then remove the circlip holding the pulley and its bearing in place. :)
 
Well in the end I managed to get hold of the pulley assembly from landrover for the air-conditioning pump. Put it all back together and seemed to work fine. We are now several months down the line and the air-conditioning pump itself has seized. Drove to a family gathering with the aircon on and went to start up a little while later and there was a horrible screeching noise from under the bonnet and the engine stalled as soon as I released the ignition key when trying to start it. Called the RAC man out and he thought it was a tentioner on the aux belt but then found out it was the aircon pump seized. Now driving with no aircon again.
 
Have checked it out tonight and the compressor hasn't seized so you are probably right that I did over tighten the aircon belt. It looks like the bearing in the aircon pulley has disintegrated which caused it to lock up.

Hi all,
I've just changed the alternator on my TD4 and when removing the air con pump for access I noticed that there is an awful lot play in the pulley wheel on the air con pump, is this normal??? I know they use an electronic clutch, but even so it seems very excessive. The belts was also in a bad way so as it's winter I've just cut the belt off for the time being. Is it possible to just replace the pulley wheel and clutch?? I imagine a replacement pump must be very expensive and it'd need a re gas afterwards.

There's 2 versions of pulley. The v6 is wider than that of the Td4, but the bearing is the same. If you have a puller you can get the bearing out. My v6 and the Td4 spare I had at the time had the same bearing. You could get the bearing out of the pulley but some have said they had the version that you couldn't get the bearing out. If you remove the bolt in the middle of the pully you should be able to fit a thicker bolt that only fit's in so far, and pull on this to get the pulley wheel oft. Then look at the bearing from there.

Not a priority at the moment anyway, but well worth bearing in mind come spring, especially as I do have a puller which may help.

Saying that I should hopefully by then be the proud owner of a 4.0 Jeep Wrangler TJ!!!!! Bye bye freelander.....

May I be the first to offer my condolences. The loss of one's Freelander is too much to even think about. :p
