Hi, just got a Freelander 2000reg from a friend, he left it standing in the garage for (3yrs) as he claims there was alot of white smoke coming from the exhaust. He recently tried to open the injectors but he spoilt the threads on one of the injectors.
I got the TD4 off him, done the threads with helicoil put back the injector, it was low in engine oil. So, I added more oil and it did start, its fine when its cold but as it warms up and you give throttle it starts emitting white smoke from the exhaust and also throws out engine oil, as there is a big black patch on the ground behind the exhaust and the oil level has gone low.
I was wondering if anyone can help me, find the fault with it?

Changed the crank case breather, made no difference.
Yes turbo could have gone faulty, any idea how much it would cost to get it fixed?

I have heard td4 engine is same as Rover 75 CDTI, can I fit Rover 75 Turbo instead, as its sold much cheaper on eBay £50?

turbo dead

seal kit should do the trick unless the turbine or casing is already damaged

take turbo off, open and examine

if no damage then rebuild with a seal and bearing kit

plenty of info on youtube about this

Definitely oil seals on the exhaust turbine of the Turbo, luckily not the inlet side as that can cause the engine to self fuel, over rev and blow up.

Sort the seals or get a re-con turbo and all should be well - might still smoke a bit under revs for a while as it burns the leaked oil out of the exhaust.

Update:
Today, I finally removed the TD4 Turbo, I was not sure what make was it, so now I know its Garrret GT1749V 7781450 B 708366-1
I have attached few pics, the shaft itself is wobbly, the blades are slightly bent, I havent opened the Turbo yet.
I am sure, I will have to replace all the gasket, bushes and seals.
One silly question, do I also have to replace the fan blades or I can pull the blades straight with plier? Will it need balancing?
if not repair this, I am thinking, on eBay I can get a new complete balanced core with blade for £128.
This is the first time I am trying to rebuild a turbo, I would really appreciate your input.
