Hi All, my 200tdi 90/defender transfer box slips in reverse hi range unlocked making a horrible crack noise. Have I stripped a spline gear ?
Yes it doesDoes it move when you lock the centre diff ?
Its been changed quite a lot recently as it lashing out the rear seal !Last time tb oil changed?
If quiet and working when locked but noisy and not working when open then may be a problem with the centre diff in the front output housing.
so probably easier to replace fb if I can find one ?If quiet and working when locked but noisy and not working when open then may be a problem with the centre diff in the front output housing.

its a disco 200tdi with trombone mackled exhaust manifold, but think it would be a 1:4 ?Yes change is quiet easy, weight balance is weird so be prepared for it to twist as you pull it off the gearbox, check out what intput gear you have and if you can upgrade to a cross drilled type.
Standard defender one is 1.4, disco is 1.2.

do you happen to know where the serial number is ?You can check the serial number at ashcroft transmissions site, there might even be a sticker on it stating the ratio.
Look near the filler hole/bung. Newer models are pin dot numbers on the lower left.do you happen to know where the serial number is ?
Thats great thanksLook near the filler hole/bung. Newer models are pin dot numbers on the lower left.
Also look for a little sticker near there for the ratio.
Good job I looked its a 1:222 ratioLook near the filler hole/bung. Newer models are pin dot numbers on the lower left.
