Taxing Vehicles - Buying used cars

Right ow folks. We have just bought a VW Golf GT TDI, very nice it is too. Now the tax is up in the next 4 days or so and the owner said it would be better for us to tax it as "his insurance had run out" or something.

Now, is this going to be a cock for us because i have been thinking, we would need to get our insurance papers in order, MOT cert, no problem. But the log book (V5) will still be in his name untill its sent off and has ours in it. So will the post office say no, you cant tax the vehicle to us? meaning we cannot drive it back from Taunton to Bristol.

I thought he should be able to renew it online without his insurance or am i wrong? I think he has transfered his ins. to his new Audi.

Any help appreciated.

You can't tax on line without insurance.

You can tax at the Post Office, so long as you've got the transfer slip from the V5, the MOT and Insurance Certificate (Fax copy is OK).

Or another alternative would be to drive it without tax. If you get stopped, show the copper the reciept to prove that you have just bought it, but you cant tax it without your insurance docs, (which are still in the post).

The only problem being if you go past some ANPR cameras and get an automatic ticket.

Or if you insure it. the bloke can order a tax disc online for you......as long as you wait for it to arrive

yer, that was the 1st option, but he has transfered the insurance so its techincally on his drive, uninsured. I did ask him to. but it seems to be a ball ache.

I did think that, but worried about the cams. Cos its up the M5 and all, worried.

OK. I didn't know if the route home would take you past and SPECS / ANPR.

I did a simular thing when I bought the Disco. I picked it up on the 29th, (a Sunday), with no tax. Got stopped on the way back home by traf-pol as it was showing a SORN'ed and no insurance.

Showed the copper my traders policys and reciept of sale and told him that I would get it taxed the following day. He was cool with that. Didn't even give me a producer.

But like you say, if your going past SPECS / ANPR then there is no copper to reason with, it's just an automatic ticket.

The trouble with that is insurers have something like 5 days to update the records, so it might be a week before it's available to tax online, some insurers are really bad at it and don't seem to get it done ever unless you chase them.
