tax exempt series 3

I can tell you there aren't many genuine ones! Most nowadays (from what I've seen for sale and trundling around) are quite clearly newer 3's that have had ID's from earlier vehicles put on them.

....1972..... genuine by the amount of welding i have had to do ...

I've just scrapped a 1980's S3 on which the chassis is was sooo bad it was literally coming away in great handfuls.

You're probably safer on originality with a Series 3 lightweight as many of them will have come out with current-at-time-of demob registrations, on which owners will have paid current rates of tax, then applied for build datasheets from Gaydon to have correct age-related numbers issued in order to gain tax exempt status. I'd imagine this has led to less 'ringers' amongst lightweights than civvy s3's.

You've only got to type in 'tax exempt land rover' into eBay to see some of the ringers that are out there ... there's even one chap right now clearly flogging just the V5/ID. (type in 'MOT August Series' in eBay, look at the answered question.)

"Oh yes, it's a Series 2 rebuilt with Series 3 wings" ... yeah right! And the bulkhead, and the dash, and the steering wheel, and the doors, and the grille, and the front panel, and the windscreen, and the doorhinges ..... do they think we're stupid???? And that's just the stuff visible in the photos!

Stops ranting, gets off soapbox. Sorry OP, hope yours is genuine.

Do you actually know how the points system works for ID retention? NONE of those items you listed is worth a single point! Points to retain ID are for the chassis, steering, gearbox, axles, suspension etc. The body stuck on top can be any damn thing you want!

I sure do fella, thanks for askin' so nicely. If you do a search on this forum you'll find I've pointed other folk to the scoring system many times.

Technically I'm afraid you're not quite correct, as the 'steering wheel' forms part of the 'steering system' which does have originality points attached.

You don't see close-ups of the relevantly wrong bits of chassis in the ebay photos very often though. And there are quite clearly Series 3's with Series 2 registrations simply to get tax exempt status ... I can point you to one there right now if you'd like.

I've got one, an early S3, as original as I've been able to keep it. I'm currently replacing the chassis but keeping everything else. I'm reasonably sure it's not a ringer 'cos I've had it for the last 20 years.

the rolling 25-year exemption stopped in 1998, 12 years ago ... so if it's a s3 and you've had it 20 years it won't have been ringed (rung?) for RFL exemption before you got it, assuming the registration is 1971 or newer.

owners of real early s3's can see if they've got the original bulkhead by looking at the drip rail on the bulkhead at the back edge of the bonnet. it should be two short channels, one under each hinge. later bulkheads have a continuous curved strip right across the vehicle.

disclaimer ... this regrettable level of anorackness has been cultivated by having been conned by a ringed vehicle before, and possibly still feeling a bit sore about it!

Yeah, that's what I meant. Useful tip about the bulkhead, that.

I have got a 1972 series 3 with original gearbox, engine, chassis and steering had to replace some body parts and changed few bits but tried to keep a lot or original parts bloke before me had really looked after it.

I've just bought a 1972 88, wanted one for ages and finally took the plunge. The guy I bought it from has put chequer plate in the usual places, fitted a winch and a full length roof rack. These are coming off! I want to put it back to as original as I can if possible. I do need a gearbox though so if you have a good one you are willing to part with then please let me know.:)
