Tapping and squeaking

Sorry to be vague but I find it hard to explain , I get this tapping squeaking noise when moving only tapping when stationary. Replaced cambelt and water pump yesterday timing was spot on starts and runs fine just this annoying noise. I'm sure somebody will be a smart arse and say it could be anything but I just wondered if anyone knew of a common fault which would cause this.

Have you checked your tappets?

Yes they are ok now but still making the noise hummm gallon of fuel and a match

I know the feeling I have a missfire on idle thaf I have tried everything to cure so I am only left to replace injection pump
Did your engine make that sound before you changed the timing belt?

Yes but I hardly revved it due to not knowing what history it had

Does the tapping get worse if you load the engine?

I would say yes

Sounds as if it might be big end but I am just guessing without listening to it

Tappet or tappet guide worn, right hand side of engine see the 8 bolts wired together, these stop the guides twisting, head off for access, you may be able to see with pushrods out and a good torch, roller is brass.

If you have a long screwdriver you can use it like a stethoscope, hold the handle against your ear and place the other end of the driver on your rocker cover. You should be able to move the screwdriver to various other locations to see if you can isolate a particular area with the noise you are hearing. Usual H&S disclaimers regarding falling into fans / ties /hair etc getting caught in belts etc

Today I changed the oil and as if by magic it has disappeared completly, which is strange because the oil wasn't that old however it could be a co incidence

You used that magic snake oil

what make/viscosity oil?

5w30 total

Way way to thin for a 200 tdi lump, thats the sort of **** modern engines run on.
Ive always used 15/40 standard mineral oil.

It says in the service manual that it is suitable. ?? I could just use this as a flushing oil and get 15w40 if that's recommended

It does say that that is suitable in the manual. But only for operating in temperature consistently below-10C.
For British climate 10/40 or 15/40 are best. I use 10/40 synthetic oil, but 15/40 mineral is much cheaper. Get good oil, high detergent diesel oil.
Kernow oils, in the industrial estate at Loggans, are much better value than halfrauds etc.

Looks like the 5w30 can be used as a flushing oil then ...

I wouldn't, try and take it back and get your money back. Just get the right oil, and a filter up LRP, and it will be fine.
Flushing is a waste of time, if you are really worried about it, just change the oil a bit early next time.

Just remembered, I think you've put it in the engine, in that case youll have to ignore the bit about taking it back

Just drain it out and put the right stuff in
