Hi,

I've got the FL Serengheti '03 plate.

Having just been driving around, it's started making a noise, in what I can describe as sounding like a tank, or like one of these modded car with silly exhausts.

Now I think that this noise is linked to the exhaust, but I'm no mechanic, and the noise is coming from the engine compartment.

There are also 'exhaust' smells coming into the cab.

Has anyone got any urgent suggestions as to what may be wrong with it, and what the cost involved maybe?

Just the one, get rid of it

A Gaylander making noises like a tank!! I think not, making noises like a pram more like. :baby: :baby:

Wow I'm impressed, I didn't have time to blink and I get a response thanks. Is this expensive to repair/replace? or is it a case of taping/blocking something up? where would these be roughly in the bay?

I don't know exactly where on the engine they are on a freelander. Look for several rusty pipes that meet together into one single pipe and then join the exhaust. They may be covered by a heat shield plate (Thin bit of tin hovering above to stop you welding yourself to it). The bit with lots of pipes joining into one is the manifold. The bit that bolts to that and goes downwards is the down pipe. If it's the manifold they normally go where the multi pipe bit meets the engine. If it's the down pipe it is normally where the metal flanges (joints) are or the bottom of the curve where the water may settle. You need to ring around for prices. The manifold can be tricky to get off without snapping the studs (bolts) that secure it.

It is often easier to find where it is blowing by having the engine running and feeling where the leak is. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL. IT GETS VERY VERY HOT. YOU WILL LEAVE YOUR SKIN ATTATCHED IF YOU TOUCH IT WHEN HOT.

Thanks for the info, will need to check tomorrow.

Having a quick glance, could this be the area I need to look at?
