Hi all, as the title impliesreally, I want to take out the the binnacle (the bit in front of the steering wheel with all the clocks in) out of my car as it feels loose and is too rattly.

I was thinking of taking it out and re-assembling it bedded on some sort of mastic to quieten it down.

Anyone got any ideas/help/tips about taking it apart?? I want to get it secured BEFORE I go on my BIG TRIP !!!

Cheers

Dave

If you tilt the steering wheel right down, you will see 2 recessed screws just above the wheel. Undo those to release the front edge of the binnacle. If memory serves, the back edge is held down by a couple of spring clips. Should just pull straight up.
Release the multi plugs from the switch clusters and it should come clear.

If its rattly, it may be that the 2 screws have pulled through the plastic or the plastic's broken round the spring clips. If its the screws, you could just put longer screws with washers under the heads.

Hi Diver, thanks for that but I think we are at cross purposes. The bit I was referring to is the bit with the speedo and all the other clocks in it, not the steering wheel shroud.

Thanks for replying tho' 'cos I'm not being overwhelmed with responses so yours is particularly well-recieved

Cheers

Dave

1) Lower steering wheel for access . Remove 2 screws . Remove strip under instruments .
2) Then lift top panel clear and disconnect multiplugs .
3) You now have access to 4 screws securing the binnacle to fascia - 2 each side .
4) Carefully ease 2 lower panel finisher brackets downwards.
5) Withdraw binnacle to gain access to multiplugs .
6) Noting their fitted positions disconnect multiplugs .
7) Remove binnacle .

So says the LR manual.
Hope it helps .

Thanks very much Dooroy, I'll have a look at that tomorrow, weather permitting.

It rained here today !!??!!??

If the instrument pack is the same as Disco II, be careful how you store it when removed. It must be kept upright (in car pos'n) cause the dials are damped with oil. It will leak out if placed on its back etc and then yer dials are stufed!!
