ok been on here for a while with my 1999 1.8 petrol 2 door which has been great,so now have an 02 serengeti td4 2 door with 75k miles and 1 previous owner and well pleased with it,but i have one problem that may be caused by the state of the roads over here iv noticed some times the tailgate window lowers itself when driving (over bumps?) also if you shut the drivers door hard?? presumebly this is to do with the sensor for the hard top? or the ccu unit maybe?? if so where are they located and what do they look like? i have searched but couldnt find anything similar,i do have a 2 door td4 for spares so could swap the parts if need be
cheers gus

I believe there are some kind of contacts for the hardtop which can give trouble especially if the top itself has been on & off regularly in the past. Not too sure where they are but someone who knows more should be along soon.

ive searched!! i realise it has something to do with the sensor for hard top, never had a problem with the old freelander but i never had the top off,the guy i bought it from said he took the top of regular to keep kids amused!! i will take the interior panel off at the rear drivers quarter tomorow its suppose to be in there somewhere???

The switch which is responsible for sensing whether the hardtop is fitted, is located on the drivers side at the rear, BENEATH the 'diagonal' frame of the hardtop roughly in line with the rear wheel. If the hardtop is incorrectly fitted, the switch will assume that no roof is fitted, and instruct the rear window to lower. Or the switch itself is knackered!!
Hope this helps, Russ

thanks russ,as i said will check it out tomorow,i presume i need to take the interior panel off,i read some where if you tape over the sensor it then thinks hard top is on?? correct??

Yep...the switch has to be depressed to allow the rear window to operate. I reckon its probably knackered, or poor electrical contacts. The hardtop would have to be very badly fitted or completely unsecured for the switch to operate....
I'm guessing that it is accessible from inside the car? I spose i must be.
Good luck
Russ

ok thats it fixed,i just taped it up as it appears the hard top wasnt fitted properly but cant seem to get it any closer to sensor i looked at my spares one and the hard top was a lot closer fit and held the button right down, and it was a fairly easy job the panel between the side windows pops off and the switch unclips from bodywork, seems fine so far

Can someone please show me in pictures where this switch is? I change the hole electric window unit last day. But now the window goes down right after it hits the top. And it stays down.

Torsen have you calibrated the window if not follow the below and see if this helps
The control unit needs to know the position of the rear window glass for safe operation. If you have
problems with operation of the rear window it might be worth trying this procedure'
1. Disarm the anti-theft alarm system.
2. Dis connect the vehicle battery
3. Wait 5 seconds'
4. Reconnect the vehicle battery
5.The CCU will now drive the tail door window to the fully lowered position'
6. Turn the ignition switch to the 'ignition' position'
7. press and hold the tail door window switch in the 'Up' position until the window has reached the fully closed position.
8. The tail door window should now be calibrated. If calibration has failed,a warning buzzer will sound
