hi just got a freelander 3 door and the tailgate was working fine, just went to open it and it wont, the window drops down a bit but then nothing happens can hear a relay clicking when i open the handle but it stays stuck, any help would be great. the window opens fine.

Hello,
Had the same problem with my 5 door. Switch would lower the rear window but the rear door would not release, almost felt like it was locked.
Mine still had warranty on it so went back to the dealer, turned out to be a faulty lock mechanism, which they replaced.
FYI, I had problems getting the rear door to catch when you closed it for a few weeks before it finally failed, not sure if you have had the same issues?

Had the same problem. Turned out to be the wire in the link between the door post and the door, so no power to the lock release solenoid.
Solution was to get access to the boot space, rip off the interior panel, Lower the back window, locate the solenoid wire then splice two 9v PP3 batteries in series between this wire and the door frame. This releases the door and give access to make the repair to the wire loom.
How the heck do you open the door if the solenoid has failed???? There is no access.

As you can hear the relay clicking it is probably the lock mechanism, you need to get the door panel off to investigate. Good luck !!!

I have The very same problem 
The window drops normally, double click from soleniod but door is still firmly locked. Having removed the rear panel; (lots of wires) and access is 'very' limited. Nothing appears loose, no broken wires. I was able to unclip the rear panel! funny no screws!! hmm I'm wondering if a previous owner(s) has had this fault before. Any suggestion on how I should tackle this?
3 door, 1999 1.8 freeelander.

Would anyone hazard a guess? that the problem is the locking mechanism?
