got it on the offer in Halfrauds where u get a free socket set. needed the socket set so seemed a good deal!! then thought about it and werent sure it was anygood.
so apart from the wallet side of it, is it up to the job?? have heard fully synf aint suited 4 some engines

Just done my oil change and got the free 3/8 socket set, but u will only get that with the fully synthetic 5w40 @ £32 a 5ltr can although the free socket set retails at £29
Take your pick of oil available and u pay the money.

5w40 Fully Syn. For max engine protection under extreme loading or enthusiastic driving. Also suitable for use in the latest turbo diesel engines.
5w30 Part Syn. Suitable for the latest efficience engines including all modern Fords from 1998 on.
10w40 Part Syn. Suitable for most modern multivalve, turbo or fuel injected engines where synthetic protection is essential.
10w40 Enhanced Mineral. Suitable for most fuel injected engines.
15w40 Part Syn. Suitable for most non fuel injected engines since 1980 where synthetic protection is preferred.
15w40 Enhanced Mineral. Suitable for most non fuel injected engines since 1980.
15w50 Basic Mineral Suitable for most pre 1980 vehicles.
Note: "Lower numbers indicate greater fuel efficency for modern cars".

It's thinner and the tolerances like the big end shells etc were set/designed to run in with the thicker oil, and therefore the clearances are larger with the thin oil, and can't protect them. You put ordinary oil in a newer engine built for synthetic and watch it fook up.
That's what the oil tech guys, told us and not to put it in our cars coz it would fook them. It also pished out every seal on our older trucks, cost a fookin fortune. Went to semi eventually.
On a positive note the engine can't burn it, it just chucks it out the exhaust.

32 quids for 5 litre!! I get mine from tractor farm store overline 10w/40w 20 litres 12 quids ran perfectly okay tractor engines chucks out more horse power etc and it is fine for my 200tdi an important tip here! this was covered few weeks back can't remember who suggested this kind of oil but it is good deal. my oil was from a firm called Malpas Tractors.

It will be ok mate, i think the preferred recommendation is 15w/40 mineral oil or 10w/40 semi synthetic for the 200TDi.
Mineral oils cannot handle high temperatures and don't offer the kind of anti wear protection that synthetics can.
I would go for a semi synthetic 10w/40 in yours.
Just get the best you can afford, Fuchs do a good one called Titan XTR 10w/40 which is always reasonably priced or if you want a really special one go for Motul 6100 Synergie+ 10w/40.
Motul use Ester (a true group 5 synthetic) whereas most other oil companies use heavily refined/hydrocracked crude oil.

Ive been using millars semi-synth 10/40 in mine ,15 quid + vat 5 litres from Land ranger services.Changed the oil and filters in November but only done about 4000 miles since then .Do you think I should change it again or will it be ok to wait untill about 5 or 6000 ?. Anyone know where to get that cheap good quality tractor oil from in Manchester area?Trying to save afew quid as I need to buy two cans of millars and its costing me £35.

It will last the 6000 mile interval without doubt chap. You would probably be better off buying a 20ltr tub of the 10/40 millers to be honest.
I think the tractor oil is Ovoline and it's made by Fuchs.
Try having a look at this website, it's the home of the legendary Oilman who knows far more about oil than anyone on this website ever will. Opie Oils you can buy online and he only stocks high quality oils.
