Am I right in saying that you can shim up the front swivel's on a defender axel. I see that all the service kits contain shims, is this slightly like A series mini where you can take the lift away from the front ball joint. How easy are the swivel's to remove, inspect and replace

I've done a couple on my series and the Defender doesn't look too dissimilar - It's not too hard a job. The shims are to set the preload on the top and bottom bearings and will allow you to take wear out of the thrust washer but it won't help if there's wear in the top bush.
