Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good place to get a swivel gasket/seal kit for a TD5 Defender? What exactly will I need to do it properly?
Also going to need some grease or will it be EP90?

Don't put EP90 in em!


Paddocks do a rebuild kit for £16 but its Britpart so you are probably better off buying the bits from your local indy garage and paying a bit more for decent parts!

What exactly do I look for? Is it called a swivel repair kit, replacement seal kit or something like that?

So if not EP90, is there a special grease/oil to look for?

nothing wrong with ep 90 i often add to swivels i know have had oneshot in as it can leak out in to diff and impossible to know how much is left in without stripping swivel down for oneshot google stc3435

Good point actually. I do check the level on occasion but never even though that you couldn't accurately check level of grease. Reckon ill stick with ep90. One shot grease is bloody expensive anyway
 
I've got to do mine next week but I have to say I'm still a bit dubious about ordering the britpart kits, just from the point of view of how good or not the bearings are!
 
Do the kits come with wheel bearings then and would you change them at the same time..?

If not Britpart then who else?

No but if you are redoing the swivel seals it would pay to renew the swivel bearings at the same time as well!

Timken would probably be a fairly good bet or bearmach but you will be looking at £15 plus just for the bearing!

If you are only doing the seals and back plate then the seals and back plate are only a few quids each

It sounds like a good idea. Is it much more work?

Is there anywhere that will do me both kits by Timken or Bearmach?

Bottom bearing takes the load ,but top is often worn through less lubrication.
To change bearings if 300 TDi and after or bush and bearing if 200 TDi and earlier you will need to strip back to housing which means removal of stub axle and drive shaft then undoing top pin will allow housing to be removed and parts changed ,you don't need to and shouldn't try to remove bottom pin,
Rialko bush fits only in one position even though it will fit in any it has two cutaways to allow for seal in full lock ,it can be fitted using hammer if suitable soft metal or wood dolly put on top to avoid damage, ensure you fit new Rialko thrust washer in bottom of bush ...
