swivel rebuild help

hi all, my name Dave

i am new to this forum.
i have recently purchased a 1988 defender 90 with a defender 300tdi and r380.

im having a problem with the swivel gasket leaking on the near side/passengers hub.
this seems to have developed a slight drone to this side when steered in its direction

i have looked through the manual, and it looks a bit beyond what i am able to do.

i have had a quote from autoland in houghton regis, beds- they said if it is just the gasket, it would be around £70, but if the swivel requires a rebuild- it could be around £250ish.

i am not bothered about this, but times are hard at the moment.

my question is, is there any one else who could do the job for me for less??

i am in luton beds, and i have a workshop a walk away from autoland in houghton regis

i would be very grateful for any help or advise.

If its not your everyday drive then just get stuck in following Busters link it's all just nuts 'n bolts + a bit of care & good tools >I think by sounds of it I'd get a wheel bearing kit as well....If your that near Autoland I'm certain they'd give advice if you asked [or even drift old inner race out seat new one for a small[????!!!!!]fee

cheers for the replys lads.

the biggest prob i have is i can only use the workshop from day to day, and i can not leave thing incomplete over night etc as other vechiles are stored there over night.

so if i was to do the job, i need to ensure i can get it complete in a day.

get the parts you need in advance then, when you have them all do the job, wont take longer than a day even with tea breaks

If ye're that worried about it, do one one day and the other another day

The best way to do it if ye're unsure is to take photo's of stuff coming off, that way ye can be sure to put it back on the right way

The trickiest part about doin' the swivels is settin' the preload. It can be a right PITA! Have a manual near hand for torque settings and just to give ye an idea about what ye're doin'. Not that bad a job to do really
