This evening I was stripping down my new axle and cleaning it up ready for me to fit on my defender,
I was going fine until I unbolted the brake pipe bracket and after that I noticed there is now grease leaking from bottom of swivel ball,
Have I damaged the seal and now need replacing.

Any help would be great as I'm a beginner at this and it's my first time working on a defender thanks

When you undo the top bolts it loosens the tension on the bottom bearing so it will leak, when you retighten the top bolts it will seal again, then top up oil in swivel housing :)

The brake pipe bracket is also the top bush or the top pin for the bearing on the swivel ball depending on the axle you've got, so you've probable just opened up the seal when you've undone the bracket, is it still leaking after you've tightened the bracket back up?

Went to do mine today ( change swivel ball ) stripped it all down, got new kit out of box and found that they give me the wrong kit ( non abs ) so had to put it all back together again, did have new top bush kit and bottom bearing and seal, so not a total loss but ball will need replacing soon as pitted, I know I should of checked the kit before I started doh.

Stupid question but how do you know if you have abs? As when I bought mine last week he asked if I had abs and I said I didnt know. But then I asked what the difference in balls was and he reckoned there wasnt? I dont want to strip mine down to realise I have abs but have bought non abs swivels

If you have a sensor wire going to the top of the swivel housing you have abs, should have abs light on dash till you get to 5mph aswell, I was annoyed at Craddocks as when I was getting the parts I told them they have my chassis number on there system but he never bothered to put it up on screen, they had to refund my money though today :)

Jam your brakes on somewhere safe, if it locks up and skids you don't have ABS if the pedal vibrates under your foot and it doesn't lock up you have ABS :)
