Personally I wouldn’t downgrade the car.
You never know what you would do in the future.
I will get some pics tomorrow as we have a bit of a mix match of trailers and cars with different sockets. We have adaptors coming out of our ears

Get the 13 to 7 adapter. Remember electrics are checked for mot on new motors.

Ok sorry a day late
So first note the slope slots on the outside this is why you turn the plug to make it draw in.
The piece my thumb is on stays still as it holds the pins.
Second pic is how it would look before you place it in the socket
Third pic is how it would look once plugged in. And the flap on your socket should sit over the bit with my thumb on.
When you untwist the plug out the center piece should click to hold it in place ready to be plugged back in again.
However if you have been messing with it the center could be set in the wrong place hence you will have trouble fitting it.
You need to ensure the locator “peg” is set at 90 from the outside flap locator to be set for plugging in.
If the center is clicked in place it is not easy to turn it so could give the impression that it doesn’t turn.
