Swap madulars to aluminum or not?

Hi Mates,

I have black steel modulars on my landy now with mud tires, not the 10" ones, I think mine are more like 6.5" wide...bought the landy with these. I am not gonna take the landy off road...yea i know many would be rolling eyes lol.
I bought this landy because I like them, its strong, turbo diesel etc., and to transport my giant scale RC aerobatic airplanes.

Right now it has a lift kit and some stupid crazy a$$ HD springs which are as rigid as mount Everest.
Since I am more in need of comfort and road handling I am thinking of getting a set of CSW springs and going with the aluminum rims ( Disco 1) with less aggressive tires...wished I could find some Boost here but I think thats impossible.

What you guys think? I have attached pics of the modular on my landy now and the aluminum rims I want to go with.

IMHO, alloys every time. And, given your intended predominantly on road usage, and changing to softer springs, = deffo alloys.

I've had a few D1's now, and rate the freestyle alloy for looks strength and practicality ( easy to clean ). SWMBO's D1 has 245/70 R16's on a 7J rim, and they ride really well - mine has 235's on, and is not quite as good..... If you can borrow a set of wheels/tyres to try, I'd recommend it....

Large scale RC sounds interesting too - do you need some off road ability in this regard ?? I ask as those current tyres look pretty off road biased, and comfort will increase with a more "normal" tyre.....

The alloys I am looking at are not Freestyle rims...the pic below is the Freestyle type.

The rims I want to use are the Deep Dish XS Style

The XS might not have come as a defender rim but there are many, many defenders using them and I have never heard of any breaking. The XS looks way stronger than the Freestyles, you can tell so by just the design.

I have read some posts about the Freestyle rims being under rated for the Defender but not the XS. IF anyone KNOWS and not heard about the XS breaking on the defender, please chime in.

These are the XS style which I think looks great as well on a Defender. Since mine has some aluminum trim and on the side steps, I think it will look good. I wont be hauling any trailer or weight either and mine is a 2 seater hard top.

The Disco weighs 2,100 KG
My Defender weighs 2,050 KG and I have since removed about 250KG in 1/4 inch steel which was installed in the entire cargo area, this should essentially drop its weight to 1,800 KG

The tyres on the landy are Mud tires which I dont need. The previous owner was a surfer so mybe he installed those for the loose sand he would have driven on by the beach.
Do not need to go off road use for my airplanes.

Apologies if we have somehow ended up with crossed wires - I only meant I like the freestyle - not that everybody else will be forced to have by my decree :).... or else :rolleyes::D:D
 
you need to check the PCD (pitch circle diameter) for the wheel studs/nuts. Freestyle 1s have a different PCD than the more modern wheels
 
I don't think your going to be able to keep the alloy center caps if that makes any difference.

Thats true. I have been doing some repairs, maintenance and upgrades to a TD5, installed new turbo, did the brakes and a full service.
The drive flanges were showing signs of wear and the owner sent me some HD flanges to install. Looking that them installed made me rethink swapping out to alloys now :)
They look cool and they are practical with more spline mating area on the flange. I prefer the flange to wear than the shaft, easier to change and much more economical..but you gotta love the look of them.

The grease cap in nice too, a big hex shaped threaded cap with a rubber seal.
