Being 17, as you know, insuance is a pain in the arse. Currently have a 90 200tdi station wagon 6 seats - insurance is rediculous - although if I convert it to a van it is a hell of alot cheaper. Are there any complications to doing this? Anyone got some first hand knowlege they can pass on? Thanks.
 
I'm 16 and have been thinking of a 90 for first car, just out of interest what quotes u getting and what's the spec of the car? How old? Engine ? Thanks
 
I think even if you convert it you will have trouble because it will still be classed as a station wagon on all the documents. I'm 18 and have a van that had windows put in the back and my insurance classed it as a van.

I'm also 18 and have a 300Tdi van. Did you tell the insurance about the windows as a modification. I am also interested in doing this as I can't see a bleeding thing when pulling out of some junctions.
 
Last time I spoke to an insurance company about my 110 CSW they told me if I removed the rear seats it would be cheaper

Don't know if that is the case or not but it worth a thought??
 
putting van sides on is dead easy, undo all the bolts round the roof, pop it up on some bits of wood, or take it off fully.

unbolt the seatbelt upper mounts and the few bolts that hold the panel in at the bottom

lift the old panels out, clean up the seal faces on the new ones (top and bottom) slot them all back together, the reverse of what you've just done

leave tightening everything up fully until it's all back together so you can massage door shut clearances, once your happy tighten up and check that nothings moved

it's not a big long job and you don't need any fancy tools, if you have a rear wash wipe watch out for pinching the hose

Thankyou, but its not the procedure I am so worried about, it's the legal side I fear. If i am unfortunate enough to have an accident, I dont want my insurance voided. When I did a quote with my 90 as a van, not a SW, i did include the back seats as well. Modifications have very little impact on the van it seems. The main question is does it have to be a commercial vehicle to have van sides LEGALLY etc. Thanks.
 
I thought landrover log books just class them as light utility vehicles, regardless of windows in the back. It also shows the no. of seats doesn't it, so if you remove the rear seats and send your log book back to the dvla to notify them of the change you should be o.k
If I was you I'd just have a word with the dvla.
Does that make sense? It's been a long night.
