It could just be a height sensor but if he's gone to the trouble of fitting valves there might be a lot more to it. If you fancy a punt, and are reasonable with the tools, you could offer him £500. At least that way you should break even if you scrap it.

Yes its a P38.....diesel at that, the 2.5 I6 BMW M51

As with any Range Rover never buy a Range Rover with faults unless you are prepared for the potential time, frustration, cost and annoyance it may be to fix it.

The EAS is a simple but often misunderstood system, armed witht the diagnostic lead available from a member called Datatek on here, you will be able to diagnose and fix the EAS quite easily.

Thanks for your help.
The problem I have is I only have a small budget, its going to be used to teach our 15 year old son to drive in on some local private land.
So I just need a basic 4x4 manual with power steering but simple to fix, so it looks like a Disco or a Vitara would be best but to be honest most of the Land Rover stuff I have looked at with this budget needs work

Lead is only around £20 and if the only fault is the EAS it is a cheap motor....

Disco's at the price range will be sheds riddled with rust....

And whilst I might get beaten up here....if it to just use on private land and for training, you could just replace the EAS with coils.....but if you intend to keep it for other driving....dont do a coil conversion and fix the EAS properly.

I did think of this but it will occasionally be used on the road, I just don't want to buy a load of work

As Saint v8 says, the EAS is not as scary as the hype would make you think. If it's a decent car apart from that, you will be able to fix it easily will a little help from the guys on here.:)

Sounds like the compressor is duff (could get away with a £20 refurb kit or could be £100+ on new pump) and probably duff air-bags too (£200+). Sensors are something like £50 a corner I think. Check Island 4x4 and tot it up. The work is easy but as Dogsbody says you probably need to budget £500 to fix it as I'll bet there are some other hidden surprises.

That's my thoughts, that's why the Vitaras etc are so appealing, it would do the job but is often easier to fix.
I really wanted a Range Rover or Disco but I think my £1000 budget is too small

If the airbags hold pressure then you are looking at compressor seal gone most likely, £12.50 Island 4 x 4:) Diagnostics will give a good idea of what the problem is, maybe there is someone close by with diagnostics.
Even if the airbags are shot it's only about £260 for all 4 and dead easy to fit. As long as it doesn't overheat the rest is easy & fairly cheap. the Vitara is good but parts are expensive.

He has dissapeared and not contacted me again so still looking to see whats about I do like the P38 and Discos, but I feel my budgets a bit tight for them
I had a Vitara for 5 years and was lucky as only fitted a clutch (My fault) brake cylinder and power steering pipe.
