Suspension Compressor

Hello there.

Can some one please explain to me (in simple terms) how the compressor part of the rear suspension works please? Or point me in the right direction of a good explanation?
I have searched the internet, but i can't find a decent explanation that i can fully understand.

I might sound daft by asking this, but i am really in the dark here. When the air gets relesed from the suspension, does it go back into the compressor? Or does the compressor just supply the air?

it dont go back into the compressor but does go back through the valve block to an exhaust valve on the side of it.
