Hi all,
just put new tyres on the hippo for the MOT ( which she pasted with no probs) but i now have quite a load wine comeing from the ird unit. The tyres put on are the same size as the ones that came off other than the fact that the new ones have alot more tread. The only time the wine stops is when i dip the clutch.
Does anyone know if there is any way of stopping the wine with an additive or is it a case of a fresh unit.
How much is an ird, and also is it a DIY job to fit.
Thanks

Could be a lot of things

Firstly - have you checked the tyres are not directional and if so are on the right way, Mine are directional

Seems a bit of a coincidence only since tyres

If it is IRD its a biggish job, similar to taking a gearbox out and there about £700- £1000

I would check every other area first, You can get diff and gearbox additives that may quieten the IRD down but its a short term fix to something that may cost even more in long run

Thanks for that shutty, have checked and they r on the right way. When i picked the truck up after having the tyres fitted it was fine but after driveing it about 200 miles since, it has got wores.

tyre pressures ? I had to mess about with mine till I got it just right, found 34 psi to be ideal, but every tyre/car is different. Got to be a cheap and easy try before you rip you ird out

If it was tyre pressures then when the clutch was depressed then the sound would still be there wouldnt it ??? It goes when the clutch is in

Been there got the IRD teashirt,I searched the web and came up with Rally Trans, on 0208 558 4028. Mine went and they sent a recon one within 24hrs cost about £550 and delivered to local garage should do labour for around £300, then they collect the old one. Great service. Degs

Have you drained the IRD oil and checked for shards of metal.

They do whine a bit with age, Im in Mondo mode and it whines a little even when freewheeling down hills.

Check all options, if it drives well up through the gears leave well alone.

If your money is burning a hole in your pocket then the 2001 IRD onwards is the one to go for. It has the same ratio as the rear

Just an update. The whine is getting loader and loader now,its doing it in all gears when under load as well as when coasting.Looks like xmass is off this year kids!!!!:(

If its driving well leave it alone, its just the noise of the cogs. Mine does it in Mondo mode, all gears, coasting and freewheeling.

Its just like the whine noise you got from the old school minis.

Check IRD oil level and possibly drain the oil and inspect it for shards of metal. IRD and helical gearbox oil has additives that keep it like silk so gears have minimum friction, it gives the oil that eggy smell, (di-sulphides). These additives could be shot if the IRD has overheated so change the oil and see if its better.

Make sure you undo the top refill nut first on the IRD, they can be a impossible to get off at the best of times. Then drain your oil
