Hello,
I have been doing some more on the roof leak and it seems that one of my runners on the roof is not operating like the other side. You were right. The one on the side where the roof does not sit down is not moving when it gets to the end.I was doing this by torch just now,so could see that well but i could see it was not going forward enough like the other side .Not sure what to do.
Apart from try and get a scrapyard unit.
I assumed I would need to get new runners,so just called a main dealer who said you can get them at nearly £400.00 a pair which really shocked me.
This was just the rtunners.
I cannot afford that really.
So am a bit stuck.

I also discovered that the drain on the passenger side is blocked ,water was collecting at the top and not going away.So I plan to pull out the black drain tube and buy a new one or clean it out again if I can.I did blast it with air when i did the original new seal on the roof,so must have got blocked some how.
It will not clear now at all with air or poking wire down it.

Please can anyone tell me if its okay to just pull it out?...I hope it just dangles in the A post as it does not come out the bottom.I found the hole on the inside of the chassis where i think it should drain from.
Many thanks for all your help to date, very much appreciated.

take glass out and se if you can re-aliegn the runners, they may be out of sync, if not there is plenty on ebay, if you pull the tube out make sure you attach some wire, string etc to it to make pulling new tube through,

Thank you I will do this and see if i can get it to work.I am doing this between driving it and the small gaps in the rain.
I will come back with the outcome.
Thank you very much for the help.

Please can you explain about align the runners,I have been on it today and it all seems to work well just will not lock down still on passenger side.I have been up on the roof on a ladder and it looks correct. Well greased The gap is 6.4mm as near as can be which is right from the manual for the glass to the front end.
I cannot see why it does not go down...its odd, nothing seems to be stopping it..
any help would be be appreciated.

It's been a while since I looked into the workings, but both sides should be in the same position, well one is the mirror image of the other the same amount of nylon sliders/rollers and at the black 'hokey stick' for want of a discription, theres a pin engaged in the slot which travels along and then drops into its parked position pulling the glass down, IIRC the pin has a plastic nipple over it which can be removed and lost.
If the nipple's missing, the pin will not stay in the slot and jumps out outside of the groove, but u will see that when operating with the glass in place.

Again all the bits and bobs on the track must there, no broken bits and the same each side and when the hockey sticks move forward the pin in the side of them pull both down flat opersite each other on the track.
The glass needs to be in place unfortunately to hold the things steady, so maybe have some help to open, close the glass while u see its operating correctly.

Shame the weather doesn't help you. When I was working on my mates sunroofs it was on a bench in his garden so a lot easier, and it was sunny.

Brilliant thank you,I understand what I must look for.I did try to find pictures on the web but could not.
I will have a go at this as soon as I can and the weather permits.

it is a bit since i did one, maybe 6yr? you have to wind it slowly and watch the mech a few times without the glass in, make sure handle is in right location, post a pic on here if poss, i cannot even go out to mine and look! cos i ain't got sunroofs thank f--k! Aircon does us, but then again we don't get sunshine in the uk anymore, just Rain!

cheers

My front roof was not sitting right like yours after I redid the whole job over a year ago. It was the left side runner not sitting right and so not pulling the roof tight enough on that side ( I dropped it when it was out). I dont know the names of the parts and may not have taken pictures. But basically I took the whole mechanism appart and after much fiddling and swearing you can rebuild them and got ti work correctly. It does mean taking it appart again though sadly. I had not refitted my headlining at the time luckily! Remove teh glass from the frame and you may be able to get at everything with the lining still in. Its just a real fiddle! I will see if I took a picture??

The ally sliders either side of the glass are the bits I had to strip down to parts and reseat one of the long bar springs back where it belonged. Sorry I dont know the names of things but it was one of the silver bars you can see going from one side to the other. It had jumped out of its track and sat high, so did not pull the roof fully tight on that side. When you open the roof you can maybe look indie and see where its sitting??

Thank you very much,it sounds similar to my problem. At the moment rain has stopped things and I am hoping soon to get a dry spell to do some more on t.
Where did you get he bits to fix it from please?
I saw on e bay repair kits for sunroofs ,but they were for Freelanders,so have e mailed the firm asking if they do one for a Discovery.
New rails cost a lot in the Uk from dealers I found out.
I have looked at it operating and cannot see anything wrong and am going to fix one side , the glass on the good side and see if it seats when I push it down. The bit near the front is down it just seems to rise as it goes back.
I will update when i get on it.
Thank you for the insight and the picture.

Well here is a bit of a shock!.I have managed to close it up..could not believe it.I am not sure what I did to get it to close.I went along the rails pushing down on all the little black parts and checked all was present.I measured the distances on them and they were right compared to each other on both sides.
I soaked all with WD40 for about the seventh time. The cable things are greased well already.I pushed and pulled dtwo things at the back of the rails which stick up.But I just do not know what part caused it to close. But am overjoyed it has.I am to scared to open it again!

I did notice the handle went a bit stiff and I had to push the button in to get the roof to move, which in my handbook it says you need to do.But before today I did not need to do this for it to move.I can feel and hear what I assume is a ratchet clicking away as I wind the roof now. That is new as well.
The handle goes in its recess spot on.

Thank you again all for your help,it is very much appreciated.I took a picture of it closed now.Still in state of shlock.I have to fix the drain still and will drop the front headliner again and sort this out.I have dropped this 5 times now.

Nice one! I didnt actually get any new parts. I just took the mechanism appart and the runners and managed to get the diodgy side back on track. I forget exactly what I did but I know I had to loosen one side in order to get the bust side back right. It was a fiddle but eventually it was sorted.

Thank you.I just wish I knew which bit was stopping it closing in the first place.I have not heard back from the e mail I sent asking if these people did Discovery repair kits as well as Freelander ones .On the pictures they look like 3D printed parts, but am not sure. They come from Turkey it seems.

But thank you for the details.
