sudden violent right turn on m-way!!!

Driving home from work on m-way at 40 mph.

all of a sudden mi disco decided to turn right, nearly rippin the steering wheel out of my hands. i managed to hold on and pull the wheel central and keep to my lane., whilst almost having a bowel movement!

after a couple of seconds whilst i was tryin to get to the hard shoulder, it settled down again.. stopped and checked off side front wheel and caliper, shook wheel to make sure it wasnt loose and all seemed fine so i cautiously continued home..

had a search and there is some mention of cv joint failure.. usually preceded by clicking.. not had any clicking or strange noises of any sort from drive chain..

what should i check as i dont fancy it doin it again.. or i'll have to start carrying spare underwear every time i go for a drive...

check your wheel bearings again - had it happen twice now on different Disco's inner front wheel bearings seizes and spins the bearing on the stub axle

ive put a new bearing on nearside when i changed hub and swivel...

will have a look at the off side asap..

I had that once, inner bearing seized. Locked up on motorway, for about 2 seconds.

Struggled to get it to hard shoulder, jacked it, hmmm seemed ok but stiff.

Taxied down hard shoulder to next junction, looked again and seemed free.

So carried on and did a whole offroad day at Cowm.

Got back home, stripped it and all the rollers fell out

Had to cut the inner off the stub axle!

At the time I didn't know what it might have been otherwise I wouldnt have carried on regardless!!

yeah well it locked up yesterday tea time...

went up snake pass later last night lookin for snow as signs wer up sayin road closed due to snow, ended up doin a few lanes up holme moss..

mine did this, also when coming home from Cowm. the rubber bushes on the rear trailing arm thing had gone, causing the rear axle to twist slightly. turned left when accelerating right when decelerating.
rear steering at 70 on the motorway aint a good idea.

i,ve had this aswell was the wheel bearing on front for me...

What was snake like matey?

I'd heard it was closed too. I went up last year and visibility coupled with non seasoned green laners in the car made us turn back.

I am hoping for a better angle at it this year, sleeping bags at the ready

Happened to me on a 97 300tdi and it was the wheel bearing!
Thankfully it was on a quiet 30mph road near home, 10 mins earlier I was belting down the outside lane of the M6

bit of a disappointment.. signs sed closed.. flashin orange lights and everythin.. even barriers across road we had to get round... got there and there were articulated trucks buzzin along it.. found a bit of snow on the road back toward holmfirth.. bout 20yds of driftin snow across the road.. nothin to get excited about..

it does steer left on acceleration and right on deceleration.. ive had a look at all the bushes on the trailing and radius arms and cant find any play in bushes..

but im gonna change em all for poly bushes when the weather gets better... i aint got a garage!

inner wheel bearing on front right wheel was fubar...

replaced it today, dont kno if it drives any better cos i broke a brake pipe and aint got time to fix it now...
