So I have a 300tdi defender bought in July with 114k on clock, and now done 122k with two European tours. It had had a new timing belt, has since had head gasket, p gasket, water pump done, two full services, a new alisport oversized intercooler, all new silicon hoses and a boost pin and boost ring fitted and all runs quite well. No abnormal white smoke I can see, though I may have seen a whiff once when starting in cold??? My only gripe is it runs colder than it should but had the thermostat out and tested, a ok there. I have an EGT gauge and never been over 600 degrees since fitted and boost, etc fitted.

Had a look at a few threads, but no funny noise, smoke etc like this: https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/300-tdi-white-smoke-and-loss-of-power.265171/ the closest I could find.

I usually ease it in 1st then give it a bit of welly in 2nd, 3rd and 4th if road allows, but today I had a sudden loss of top end power in 3rd. Changed up to 4th and all ok. I can hear a bit of turno noise above a certain rev range where loss of power happens. Stopped and checked all the hoses I can see and nothing lose (have yet to check under as ground all wet ).

Anyone had this? Have seen various lighter allow spool turbos out there which have caught my eye (given at full whack, fully loaded in 5th I cannot get EGT over 600 degrees C she can handle a bit more boost :) (can't we all :))

Anyone think its another hose or does it sound turbo related? The rad is original (1996) and in great shape, the only other thing that is old and rattles like a bstard is the oil breather...

Check the turbo is actually making the boost is the first port of call.
Could also be fuel starvation ie blocked filter or rear sedimenter if you have one.

Yep is the boost actually getting to the engine?

Turbo pipes could be delaminating, intercooled could be shot and have holes etc.

Do you have an EGR? And if so is it seized partially open.

I don’t know if 300tdi had them though so apologies if not, 200tdi certainly don’t

thanks will check turbo, there is still all the low down torque and possibly even a bit of boost I would say, as the band of power seems wider than the 500rpm or so I remember of n/a diesels. is it still possible fuel starvation with that in mind? there is definitely a “turbo wheeze” noise that is new...

its a new intercooler from alisport, so would be very disappointed if it leaks but its possible. the egr either was not there or blanked when I got it, now has the fourby blank plate with probe for egt.

Okay and are all your hose clips done up tight? One of mine (top of intercooler) wasn’t holding tight and I was loosing boost, took a while to work it out though

yeah I had that one when I got it! the noise is quite similar so will check them
all but once over wiggle test shows them all together. Anybody know what goes when a turbo loses power? was going to say when a turbo blows but that’s not a good choice of words ...

Does it donit repeatedly? I.e can you reproduce it?

It may be a split in a pipe that only opens up when your on boost maybe?
yeah its all gears all the time. my last n/a diesel experience was a rented renault of the same period, a 1.6 litre pulling a tonne of car, this 2.5 litre pulling 2 tonnes feels a bit better but it could be all torque lol (sorry for awful pun)

Does the 300tdi have the same waste gate setup as 200tdi if so is it closing and at what pressure is it opening?

If there's a new noise then maybe the blades are starting to catch on the housing. Have you taken the hoses off and physically investigated the turbo?

yep, does it repeatedly, the wastegate arm is fixed / seized and there is a thin layer of clean oil all over the turbo exit pipe / tube

Have you looked at the fuelling pin that provides extra fuel when on boost? If that’s seized, or the pin it activates seized, or partially seized then that might give similar symptoms - I.e sometimes the engine doesn’t get increased fuelling so feels flat

It’s recently had a new morgan boost pin and boost ring, which is def still delivering better low end, and there is (new) oil on turbo out pipe so am leaning more towards turbo at mo???

Well all, taken all manifold, turbo, etc apart and put back together, which is a good exercise I suppose in checking parts in your engine are in good order suppose and heat freeing old bolts / adding grease to bolts so can easily access later...

However I still do not have boost... it seems originally the arm actuator had siezed on engine side due to heat / rust (?) and that is now free and lubed, last point today is to put a new wastegate in and see...

Ok, so
replaced the wastegate and have boost back ;) Think the arm is too long as now have more lag, bigger boost and egt keeps rising after taking foot off lol (used to drop instantly).

what was interesting is that the old wastegate was really, really stiff and when we finally pulled it open between a vice a load of black oil came out .... seems like somehow a load pf
oil got dumped in it and siezed it???

the problem is I have to take all
the manifold etc off to adjust the arm ... is it worth getting the fourby boost controller to be able to regulate boost?

anyone know why the vacuum for the wastegate is not taken from the manifold? wouldn’t that reduce lag?
