hi guys, got a problem with my 300 tdi 1997.
I was driving across a field 20mph and the engine note changed and power seem to die a bit, coming home on the road it was more noticeable.
started the car this morning and tickover was normal but pulling away was a real struggle and white smoke. as the engine warmed up things got a bit better, when you rev the engine to a certain rev band the smoke appears and it starts to misfire.
I have checked valves and gaps and cracked the injectors with the engine note changing on all four, could it be turbo as when I removed the inlet pipe it was making a slight wurring noise..
thanks in advance.

belt was done 3 yrs ago and tickover is sweet 137000 on the clock.
head gasket doubt it, oil clean no white deposits and no pressure in header tank.
this is smoke not steam.
like I say, it runs smooth until you hit a rev band and smoke appears and it misfires.

cheers chris, that is what I was suspecting. I can smell the oil burning as im going along, but im going to do a compression test the weekend to make sure cylinders are good.

remove out let pipe from turbo and run engine see if oil seeps out , run engine with intercooler to inlet manifold hose off, check all valves fully open and tappets as well as compression test

I have the same problem on start up white smoke but it clears after about 1 mile I did my
