Hello fine folks,
I have been enjoying the landrover immensely including towing the caravan.... until the weekend that is..

The landy developed a heating problem culminating in the wife being stuck on the A5 I topped up the water and thought there may be an air blockage in the system....

I cured that and it ran fine after parking it for two days without moving it i tow the caravan back down the A5 and the temp goes up to the red .. I pull over and see steam pouring out of a hose which i believe to be part of the heating system.. i repair that and drive off after an hour to let it cool and top up the water.... not five miles goes and the temp goes back into the red....
I pull up and get green flag to take me back to base where he diagnoses a head gasket

there is pressure in the system but no bubbles in the expansion tank or any sign of oil and water mixing in the oil cap...

Could it be the water pump thats going as under more investigation the top hose was very cool to the touch coming from the radiator to the thermo housing while all the other hoses were extremely hot,,,

Any advice gratefully appreciated....

First thing is to get it filled up properly, do it through the thermostat plug, but these are **** so get a metal one from a plumbers merchant and replace it.

Run it with the header tank cap off untill you are satisfied its circulating, feelling the hoses and the heaters are working, set to hot.

Then put the cap on and run it up, again keeping an eye on the hoses and temp. Check for leaks carefully and road test it local.

See how you get on, if the thermostats stuck then it's gona overheat before you get out, and if the heads away chances are it's gona chuck all the water out the header tank as its starting to warm up with the cap off.

Thanks Dave,
News from the Garage today there were in fact three hoses that had a split in.. which is worrying I had found one?????

It did not over heat at all but the garage say that the radiator only got hot in certain places.. which he feels means the radiator is knackered and wants to put another in.... okay so far apart from 180 pounds for a new radiator...
needless to say i declined this and will if necessary find another source and change it myself,,

I got one for my disco for £130 notes, but mine was rotten, however check it yourself before you pull it out, the guy might be bull ****ting you, also if the general condition of the radiator looks good stick some rad flush in it and give the fooker a good clean out before you put antifreeze back in it and see how you get on before you fork out yer dosh.

Don't buy a new radiator, look for a factor who repairs them and get a recon one, probably off the shelf or get him to put a new core in yours. Same price.

okay some updates on this topic.... I was travelling on the m/way and the temp shot up when i hit 3k revs but went down when i dropped the rev's

I eventually got it home....

i left it a week and managed to start on it today.....

All the hoses seemed okay but the temp seems to sit halfway again without and movement... i checked the rad and that must have been partially blocked but seems better now i flushed it through... the thermostat seems okay although i took it out to check it in boiling water and it worked although slow in operating so i shall get a new one..

I put everything back together and gave it a run and low and behold I found a water leak... none of the hoses it's from the water pump...

So i have now tried to unbolt the pump only managing 4 bolts the rest have worn the heads round as i tried to undo them......

Had to give up on it for now as it's too dark to see... not entirely sure how i'm going to resolve the bolts... but will get a new pump in the week

Hello mate , I was expecting a call from you over the weekend but it seems you were up to your armpits in it:D .

If you are getting a leak from the tale tale on the water pump then chances are its naffed. If you have trouble with the bolts give me a ring and I will give you a hand to get them out. I am working lates this week but I think I should be able to get over to you later in the week for a looksy :D .
Neil.

Anytime I had that problem, and many times I might add, you just hammer a smaller socket onto it, I have metric, AF, and whitworth so a better selection to chose from, but most multi spline sockets are prone to this problem if that's the kind of socket you are using, best with a hex one.

I have never been stuck using that technique, dont start hitting it with chissles and such like and end up with nothing to get a socket on.

Build your pump back up with hylomar, not silicone. Silicone kills engines and I fokin hate it.

Hey Mr disco basher ....

I did give ya a buzz but a young lady said you were out and about.... so I got stuck into the task...

a good job you pre warned me about the pump.. Phew!! I have a delightful son who took over the task of removing the remaining defiant bolts...

The water pump has been discarded a new one on and hey presto the Landy is back to normal.....

Drove it down and back to London in the ussual commuter traffic stayed in the middle of the temp gauge all the way perfect!!!

I shall be storing up the pennies and a few beers to sort out the boot floor pan! next......

The bashing a smaller socket was the trick my son employed with brute force and ignorance a useful combination (sometimes)

Thank you Gentleman

new brit part 300tdi radiator - £95 from Paddocks.

new rad will make a bit difference if youre towing,, mine was clogged with rad weld inside and mud on outside plus its dead easy and quick to fit.

its worth checking behind water pump between pump hosuing and block for seeping/water marks from 'P' gaskett..
