Hi, I've got a 1994 300TDI that has developed a strange noise this morning.

Whilst driving along I suddenly realised than when the engine is under load (e.g. going up hill and accelerating) there is a sucking noise. It sounds to be coming from the passenger side behind the glove box and the wierd thing is that when I reach my target speed and throttle back, the niose disappears completely.
The sucking noise is quite loud and I can't see any hoses that are detacted or broken. The noise does not occur when the vehicle is stationary and I rev the engine. power seems to be a bit down compared to yesterday as well.

Any suggestions of where to look?
Thanks, Dave

Has a hose blown off? Check the lower more awkward ones with your hands (engine off!)

You can also get some one to reve it whilst staionary and you can peer into the engine bay (engine on so hands out!!!!!). Get the revver to press the pedal to the floor quickly and then release. This should give you a puff of smoke from where the leak is.

This should help locate it.

mine makes the exact same noise mate! never known any different till now!

I take it when the op says he's checked and none of the hoses has detached we should all ask if a hose has come off?

He says he can't see, which usually means he's popped the bonnet, looked briefly, then shut the bonnet again. Hoses could be split underneath out of view. Why don't you tell us what his problem is then, as it's obviously not hose related:rolleyes:

Thanks for all the suggestions.
As someone suggested, I had merely popped the bonnet, looked in and seen nothing obvious. I'm going to have a better look this morning and, if I still can't find it, nip down to my local garage.

I'm reallly hoping it's a split hose rather than the head gasket though!

Well what a dork I feel. I went under the bonnet again with torch in hand and still could not find anything untoward.
I took the disco to my local garage who popped up the bonnet and immediately noticed that the jubilee clip was loose on the hose where the rubber hose connects to the metal pipe to run to the intercooler. 2 minutes with a screwdriver and I have full power and a quiet (as much as it can be) disco again.
Thanks all.

 at least it's sorted now lol
