ok ive fitted new dizzy cap as it was mingeing.cleaned all and checked eletrical connections.it is good to start. When i put me foot down it is like it aint gettin the right amount of fuel and "pops" a bit when i let off over 2krpm.Its down on power and runs like a sack of ****e so am i right about carbs needing sorting?

On a lighter note it starts sweet now

sounds like timings out to me

who do i sort that then?seems right what u say

know anyone with a timing strobe light ? if they have bought 1 they'll know how to work it (hopefully :D )
had my old series 2a v8 convertion done a couple of times by me uncle (but that was 15/16 years ago so fooked if i can remember quite how he did it)

i did wonder.....
used to get parts fitted with red for repair at engineers and hell what a mess EVERY time.
Dont know when me next day arf is so will let you know how it goes.:D

should'nt need too much blue either only needs to hold it its not under a lot of stress i'd say

Quick way to set the timing-slacken the dizzy clamp bolt, start the engine and leave ticking over, move the dist. one way slowly, speed will either increase or decrease, if it decreases, turn slowly the opposite way-imagine the speed is like a mountain, you will reach a peak and it will slow down as you go over the top.Get to the peak and back it off slightly then lock up the dizzy. clamp bolt.
The old way of setting the carbs was (In the case of SU's) check that the dashpots are full of engine oil, then using a length of hose inserted in the air intake, listen for the level of the "Hiss" of the air drawn in until you reach a peak, do the same with the other carb until the level is the same on both. More precise way is to use a vaccum gauge in the inlet manifold-requires drilling & tapping for the gauge adaptor to get maximum reading. Bear in mind that poor setting or imbalance will drop the fuel consumption dramatically. A good indicator of carb setting will show up on an exhaust analyser.
Ideal timing for the V8 is TDC to 6 deg BTDC as default but wear in distributor/drive gear and elsewhere can change this.:D:D
