Hi all, i recently bought a disco 2 automatic (2003) and its great, however when i was pulling onto the duel carridge way yesterday and required a few more revs, as soon as i stepped on the accelerator it began to stutter, as in accelerating then dying the accelerating and dying again until i removed my foot. now the car is due a service soon and i did check the air filter which does have a fair bit of oil in it and was wondering if this could be the issue and if it was related to the black smoke coming out the back at the same time. good thing is i have a 6 month warranty so im eager to get it sorted for free. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know much about engines but when my head gasket went on my mg a few years back i had a load of oily sludge on my air filter and smoke out the exhaust. I dont wanna be the bearer of bad news or owt :( i hope this is not the case for you...

still no joy, took it to landrover and they cannot find the problem. they did say it seemed quite spritely for a disco and it may have been chipped but they couldnt tell. got it serviced too and this also didnt help. symptoms still remain.

check that the turbo waist gate is not seized up this causes the td5 to shudder when power is required at 60mph up words

If this is a TD5 I'd have a look at the injector wiring loom. This is a common issue that can give these symptoms. The seal from the camcover can leak and this sends oil down into the red plug on your ECU, which can cause all sorts of running problems. Check the red plug for oil. If its there clean it out thouroughly (may also need taking the top off the ECU and cleaning the inside if its bad) and rplace the wiring loom. Its a straight forward job.

Hope this helps

The oil down the wiring loom to the ECU was an issue for my Disco. In fact when I bought her, she never seemed to have much in the way of beans even after a really good service until the loom/plug was changed and the ECU drained. What a different Disco she is now.

I wouldn't mind betting that this is the problem for most I'll running Disco's

hmmm black smoke normaly means over fueling. as above i would check the injector harness but also the turbo hoses from the bottom of the turbo to the intercooler used to have problems with separation but you cant see this until removed ( u can feel them if they feel soft ) when u remove them it would look like a blister on the inside of the pipe. what happens is under acceleration ( high engine draw) the hoses is sucked together and cuts of air so this slows the engine wich releases the hose so it picks up again and then closes and so on and so forth and this gives the surging effect.

ok some great tips here, tomorrow if it isnt traditional english rain then ill clim back in the bonnet and have a look. ill keep you posted. cheers
