The seal on my transmission case cover looked a real mess so I decided to give it an overhaul. I think I have now found what is causing the problem. Looks like someone has totally mucked up two of the holes so it's not possible to fit new stud bolts. I presume that my best option is to re-use the two “horrors” someone else has employed previously and stuff the area with sealant. Any advice welcome

OK so I managed to restore 3 of the 4 holes using the helicoil kit but the 4th hole is too messed up even for the helicoil kit (the hole is far too big and also tapers off as it was the hole where the wood screw was used). Has anyone tried ever using thread repair compound? It appears to be the only option left...

i havent but this type of stuff looks a good bet considering the nuts only have to be nipped up not very tight

Thanks James, I'll let you know how I get on. I've gone ahead and ordered the same stuff by Loctite. I can get a helicoil in the hole but it slips if I apply too much pressure so I'm hoping that by using a combination of both, I'll be able to solve the problem.

Not much width on transfer case sides could you not just drill hole deeper to fit helicoil and then fit longer stud.

Solved the issue by rethreading the massive hole and fitted an M8 stud bolt. I had to change nearly all the stud bolts as they were too knackered. The proof of the pudding will be when I add the oil tomorrow
