Stuck in France towing boat. Awful chunking from underneath!

Sure they could build cars that would last forever but could you afford to pay for them? They have to build cars for a world wide market and not everyone can afford a Rolls Royce.

But what if you chucked out all the **** you do not need and just built a really well made car, that would be green, governments should make car manufactures sell there cars with a 10 year 200k warranty, but government want you to buy a new car every 3 years as much as the car companies

Which is what I was hinting at.
But big business will always make you pay.
It would be similar to buying a house, so they'd make you take out a mortgage to buy one and they'd be as expensive as heck.:eek::rolleyes::(:(:(
 
Hi All...
Just to let you know I arrived back to England with the whole rig.. Truck is running sweet.

Quick recap: Truck started making horrible Clunking noise underneath. Pulled over, got rescued and truck went to garage. They said gearbox gone...

....I wasn't convinced..

I got to work...

After I got the truck's gearbox working (removing fuse 37), the garage still wasn't even slightly interested in finding what the Clunking noise was.. Anyway, they finally acquiesced (grudgingly) after I told them my wife was at home poorly(which is true). I practically had to beg them to put the truck on the ramp. Anyway, broken U/J...
Drove 8 hours to collect an horrendous looking part at €150.. The garage fitted it the next day.. Truck fine now.. Gearbox took a hammering on the mountains! But still smooth..It's the Original box at 130k. I Guess I'm on borrowed time...?
Just to add: The owners of the Garage were not French by the way. I have always found the French very kind and helpful.

The Truck struggled in the mountains.
I'm gonna change it.. I need advice:

L322 4.2 SC
L322 3.6 TDV8

I'm not concerned about fuel costs. Just which model would pull stronger and less chance of overheat on those massive inclines with 3 or 4 Tonne on the back..

So glad to see you got home safe, AND that the part didn't cost a fortune.
The guy running the Landy garage near my place in Frogland is Dutch and he's brill, he has a French mechanic who is also a decent bloke, and neither of them mind having sensible conversations with a customer about alternative ways of fixing things.
Wonder what nationality the peeps were that you had to use. They seem not to like you finding out what was wrong with it and then sourcing the part for them to fit!
Guess they didn't like you not being a cash cow!
You say the truck struggled in the mountains, did the gearbox actually overheat? i.e. did any red lights or whatever come on? Did you have to use low range to get up a mountain?

Names were Rashid... I don't know where from though. I hated having to beg them.. in the end they would only fit the part for cash no facture (reciept).

On the mountain ranges:
I had no low range... And come to think of it, of course I wouldn't . Not with fuse 37 installed! What a dummy I am..
No warning lights on the mountain.. Only engine temp crept up to 3/4 of the gauge, I guess that doesn't count as an overheat... I slowed to 10mph then temps dropped down .. I don't remember hearing any engine fan.. Could it be faulty?

The temp on the dash is an idiot gauge, not a real temperature gauge, it has to go over a certain temp before it will move from the middle/normal, not sure what this value is for your engine

Obvs fucked off that you didn't let them rip you off, so result! in the end!
I can only imagine that if you had decent tools, i.e. jack, axle stand(s) spanners of the right size, you could have changed it yourself. ;)

I have fitted an Autometer temp gauge to my 99 with the sender in the Lower radiator hose. Normal running temp is 180F with the dash gauge needle slightly left of center. At 190 the needle has not moved. At 3/4 I would guess over 200F.

They did make large diesel engines for lorries, compressors etc. They were absolute crap.

It is only 3.5 tons honest guv ;)
 
After they'd convinced you & got you to pay for a new box they'd probably have done what was actually necessary, given your existing gearbox a quick clean to make it look like new & pocketed the money.
Based on towing with my 3.5 Classic things get slightly warmer working hard going uphills. Entirely normal.
Selecting gears rather then just leaving it in 'D' helps.

I bought a OBD reader from amazon that uses wifi to talk to phone, downloaded a app car scanner, which if reader is plugged in you can watch temp on the screen not sure how good reading is but would give a idea of what was going on, and reader under 20€ and app free
