hi all just fitting new wheel bearings on a series 3 1975 does the rear hub assembly butt up to the rear hub bearing sleeve or is there a 5+mm gap any help would be great

Dont quite get what you are saying, hub bearing sleeve ? But when the wheel hub is slid on to the stub axle the seal lip sits on the land where it runs near the back plate, There has to be a little space between the turning hub and the face of the stationary stub or the seal would soon wear away.
 
Thanks for reply but i was thinking the same myself about stationary part touching moving part,but i had to ask as this is my first full strip down and had to make sure...thanks all the same
 
Looks smaller than 5mm if it’s to scale

When you changed the bearings did you make sure that the outer race of the was driven all the way into the hub until it contacted the step inside, same goes for the outer one, but only the inner not seated correctly would affect the distance from hub to stub.
