Does anybody know if there are more than one type of stub axle thread fitted to Series 109's?
I stripped cleaned and painted the two front stub axles on my rebuild and have found that putting the two locknuts on one it is pretty stiff to turn the nuts.
One was stiff on disassembly but I just assume dirt at the time, the nuts and threads are clean and undamaged and the threads look fine to me. All four nuts go on easily on one stub but are very tight on the other.
While I cannot see any damage and the threads look OK I started wondering if there are two threads fitted over the years or one must just be badly cut or damaged that I can't see?
Anybody know?

Same thread used on all series and early defender, I think. The only odd thread I came across was on Santana stub axles. They changed the thread to metric.

1/2 shaft failure may have swollen the stub axle outwards, seen it on a truck and we could not get the nuts back on.

Thats at least a theory worth looking at which would explain the issue, I'll stick a mic on it and see if the diameter is larger than the other.

I checked them and the tight one is about 0.5mm larger at the tight point than the other, no sign of anything on the inside to show the half shaft has done any damage though.

The early type are cheap. Buy a new one.
May do, its just annoying as I had cleaned painted and renewed the seal lands already, was just putting on the nuts and new locking plates loosely to keep it all together until I fitted them when I noticed.
One of them was quite tight coming off but I just though it was crud and corrosion that needed cleaned up at the time.:(

Totally get that. Buy a new one, what else is wrong with that one?

Early and late types I think threads same though

I don't have the later ones, I have the earlier ones with the removeable lands.
Although I cannot see any damage or distortion I have to assume there is and will sort it out, just didn't want to find out later they were two different threads and someone had just put on the wrong one in the past.
Its not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.
