Struggles to start then smoke

As I have said previously it certainly sounds like fuel starvation caused by crud or air in the system.

Yes they can all have failed over time.

NGK are good replacements.

its not glow plugs as said ,it will smoke after turning over without firing from unburnt fuel ,id look at fuel ,injectors etc even know someone fit 2 injector washers

Pete start at the very beginning of the fuel system and trace your way forward. Good luck and report back

Okay found a bit of a dodgy hose from the fuel pump to the first injector. Have not told the wife but her ultrasonic cleaner will never be the same again. Pulled all the injectors out covered in carbon and crud place then in the cleaning thing for 20 min nice and clean. Okay smoking has seriously reduced only lasts for a while. Waiting for it to cool down then I will see if it starts first turn of the key.

Okay failed to start first turn of key all fuel system is fine. I have given up one of my mates has an engine I can have so it will be going in tonight. The old engine will be pulled apart to find out got an idea it's the piston rings as when I stripped the head for the 4th time I can move the pistons quite a bit I mean about 2 mm each way so I think it's buggered.
