It seems to me that the prime paint stripping weather is starting to
kick in now..
I actually managed to get outside and do a bit more of the 101 today!
(hopefully it wont drag on to a 4th year!)

I was just interested to see how many other people were cracking open
the nitromors this year and doing some landrover stripping? ;)

Just to give me something to think about while im scraping - what is
the procedure for spraying over bare ally?

Do I need to:

a) etch prime it?
b) spray on a layer of isolator or something incase ive got any bits
of old paint or nitromors left?

I was probably going to spray cellulose over these - unless someone
can suggest anything better?

how does the etch primer work? Do you just spray a couple of coats on
to the ally?
Does it act as a barrier on the ally or do something clever to it?

It ETCHES the surface to form a very strong key, by breaking down the
aluminium oxide layer.

Funny you should mention that, last evening I was having a meal with the
other half and three young ladies came into the restaurant wearing Spearmint
Rhino "T" shirts.
Just happen to notice.... :)

etch it. I had a few bits left which were baically filler.

I found when I got to the yellow stuff which looks like etch primer that
using brillow pads dipped in nitromores did the job around rivets a treat.

I did a layer of etch, 2 primer and 1 top coat so far.

The truck is now pretty much naked below about 6ft up :). I need to
get my stilts out to do the rest and get a day with no wind so that
the strippings dont blow over the cars..
The paint must have weakened over the winter as im sure it is coming
off quicker than last year (though with more nitromors.)

I seem to have like a half layer of yellow/green undercoat left. I
shall try the brillo pads on it

When I notice things like that, I have to lay down with raw steak on
my eyes!

just don't do an Alistair and get the heat gun out.......

Etch priming has an acid in which allows the paint to attach firmly to
the aluminium

Unlike Alasdair I tested the heat gun on a door before trying it
anywhere else and noticed that it didnt work very well!

I've been keeping nitromors in business doing mine!

Worked for me, but you need to get a special technique going - stripped
the entire side of the ambi in an easy afternoon. You need a really,
truly razor sharp scraper. You get the edge under the lowest layer of
paint, and roast the paint on top, the scraper lifts the paint as soon
as it can get a trace of failed adhesion, and I haven't seen any buckling.

Well I don't bother with all that palaver, I am not after a decent finish, a
tin of paint and a brush is enough for me over the top of whatever is
underneath :)

After the 150th layer though, the surface has the topology of the Alps,
and adds to the axle weight of the vehicle....

Steve

Apparantly the weight of paint was of concern to London Transport so they
came up with the idea of not painting the routemasters but leaving them with
the shiny aluminium outermost, as per the underground trains. It never
caught on.
