strange thumping noise

Hi all got myself a 1999 discovery td5 which has developed a random noise
when it's ticking over you can hear a thumping noise coming from the air in take, it's the sort of noise that a engine makes when there is no air filter on it, i've tried cleaning the MAF sensor but don't really think that has helped has any body else had this same experence could do with pointing in the right direction.

If you've judged the noise right, you have a leak somewhere in the air intake system. If so you should get a hissing noise when you rev her up. Revving the motor and listening inside the engine compartment would be a start. Check all joints including the EGR, if you've still got one?

ok will have a check tomorrow don't have a EGR took that off while back but will keep ears peeled. would MAP sensor play any part in my problem or am i just talking rubbish

Dunno, sorry. I assume your blanking plate is still tight and the vacuum pipe blocked...

If you can't source the noise a metal screwdriver between your ear and various engine bits is a good stethoscope substitute.

have the same on mine. thought it was normal. sounds like a dull thud made by a pump somewhere

Could be a pipe failing. One of the laminated pipes (if you have them) could be de-laminating and flapping in the breeze, maybe???

I get a similar sounding noise - it's coming from the intercooler on tickover and is quite normal. Check your airfilter and if any doubt at all, replace.

mines got a new K & N filter but still thuds. could it be a sign that the intercooler needs a clean out?

they way i check if my intercooler needs a clean is to look at the air filter after going through water....if half of its missing and been sucked through the turbo then its time for a clean !
