This might seem an odd request, but I'm in need of a Borg-Warner chain
drive Xfer box (Range Rover 1991-on, are they the same on the P38??)
for examination and/or modification. Since I'm only going to strip it
down with the view to using certain components in an engineering
project, I dont need (or want to pay for) a good, working one, as this
would be pointless without knowing wether the project is possible with
it. I want a (comlpete) scrap one to bugger about with.

I don't know how reliable or repairable they are in the first place,
so i have no idea wether i'm going to be able to get a knackered one.

Any ideas?

When I replaced mine with an older box I gave a friend of mine the old one
and as far as I know he's done nothing with it, might be able to get it back
but he also had a smashed one and what surprised me was the thickness of the
outer aluminium case, about 2mm max, I don't want another of those.

The P38 drops the propshaft the other side of the gearbox but if you
only want the insides then I am sure it will be OK.

I would imagine he's replaced the seized viscous unit in my old one with the
one from the smashed casing and used it, therefore if he hasn't chucked it
out there will be a broken case with a snapped chain and a seized viscous
coupling and the rest of the bits. I'll call in tomorrow and find out,
that's if they are any good to you.
