strange noise

Hi my names andy a couple of weeks ago i bought myself an n reg discovery 1 with 81000 on the clock now with almost 83000 as i do a lot of miles . It had a small oil leak that i believed to be coming from the engine, but started to worry when the leak almost disappeared and engine oil level was fine. I have started to hear a noise when coming off the accelerator with gear still engaged it sounds like it might be bearings.

I dont hear this noise at any other time so the only thing i can think of is the gearbox oil is low and when accelerating the oil pressure is good
and oil is getting to all the parts ,but when i come off the accelerator the pressure is too low to get the oil around all the moving parts and now bearings or something else is fooked but im no mechanic so any help would be much appreciated

ps this has only happened in the last 50 miles

thanks andy

This could be caused by worn UJs on front propshaft. Get underneath and see if there is any play at all in any of the propshaft joints (you can use a fair bit of leverage). If there is, get it fixed. Not a big job. This one catches a lot of people, as it's not the "normal" UJ noise.

UJs in my experience make a sort of pinging noise when they're going. However a couple of people I know have recently had noise like wot you describe and found it was the front propshaft. Don't get too excited - it MAY be that, but may be something else, eg gearbox, as you suggested, or worn diffs. Worth checking the oil levels (and colour!) in gearbox and both axles as well. If I bought a new disco I'd be inclined to change the axle oil, and probably gearbox too, as a precaution. Filthy oil = noise and wear, and it may never have been changed in the past.

yeah sounds like a good idea can you tell me the best method to change the gearbox oil ,which oil is best to use and how much

i have done a search on this but havent came up with anything:doh:

thanks andy

right small update on this . i didnt get round to changing the oil or having a look at it but had to go to the shop . i noticed that driving at 40/50 mph a change in the chamber of the road would result in a noise that sounds like the tyres were rubbing on the arch liner(you know what im talking about when the little chav down the road from you goes passed and he has 22" wheels and been lowered 60mm and his wheels are rubbing like hell, that kind of noise :p) but was defo not that .
im thinking movement in propshaft but really dont know any help would be much appreciated

thanks andy

My prop UJ needed replacing the other day, at first it sounded like a squeaking belt but then it was making a horrible metal on metal grind and rumble, when letting off the accelerator. Changed my box oil thinking it was the culprit and when I was clambering out, grabbed the front prop uj and it was as loose and wobbly as anything! Get under and give em a shake!

one of the ujs on the on the front propshaft is worn its got lots of movement

also noticed that the drain plug on the flywheel housing was missin, been told that you dont need it unless you are doing a lot of off roading but there is some oil on the housing is this anything to worry about

thanks andy

Replace the UJ now!!! That will probably sort it and even if not it must be done.
It's not a drain plug, it's a wader plug. See your handbook. If there is oil actually coming out of the hole you may have a back bearing oil seal going - the purpose of the hole is to drain any oil in there and keep it off your clutch, so the plug only goes in for wading.

thanks for the info will replace the uj asap i dont know if the oil is coming from the hole or somewhere else so going to clean the housing up with some gunk and hopefully see where it is coming from.

do you have any idea how much a garage would charge to do the uj as other than this weekend i dont have much time to do it

thanks andy

It's not a big job. Remove propshaft, remove uj, fit new one (that's the slightly tricky bit), replace propshaft with new nuts. Maybe an hour? If you don't do it, you risk complete failure of the uj, which could cause extensive damage or even an accident when the shaft starts flailing around, hitting the ground etc.

A bit of oil from the flywheel housing shouldn't be a problem. If there's a lot coming out you'll see the drips under the vehicle. Another possible source around that area is transfer box front seal. Or it could make its way down there from the rocker cover.

I paid £8-10 for the UJ and garage charged me £60 (or was it £45?) I would have done it myself but like you, I didn't have the time!
