Hi all, go a weird one - after turning off my engine this morning I got a strange noise coming from the front end, sounded to be driver side, it was like a gurgling, bubbling or rumbling type noise and only lasted for a couple of seconds after turning everything off. its the second time I have noticed it since I got the car.

Oh, its a TD4 06 plate - any thoughts anyone. Car is running fine, but has the thermostat problem where the car isn't fully reaching temperature. Only time it was reached temperature is when I was stuck in traffic heading home last night - it then reached 90ish and stayed there.

I have ordered a new expansion bottle cap just in case, I will look into bleeding the system tonight when I get home from work

Just to point out, me and the neighbour did try to do the fiat(?) thermostat hack - but couldnt get it in the pipes, and I topped up the coolant after that - so hopefully its just down to this. Can I just confirm though, I should be getting a return to the tank by the small pipe leading in at the top shouldnt I? there is a definite return here.

Little pipe at the top is the return.

Start the engine, and turn the heater on to hot. Take the expansion tank cap off. Open the bleed screw on the top heater matrix hose to check for air there, but do it up again.

Run the engine at fast idle, keeping the tank topped up to the line, until the radiator fans kick in (this may be a while in this weather).

The Td4 cooling system is said to be self-bleeding, but I found I had to do the above after changing the thermostat.

Its a its a mystery to me how the cooling system works. My understanding is the the tanks is only an expansion tank but I'm not sure. I've been loosing sleep some coolant, I thought from a leaking water pump but I'm not so sure now and I'm suspecting my tank or cap or both. I miss the days when we had simple radiators with an overflow bottle and a simple radiator cap.

Typical, just drove home popped the bonnet and checked for the noise, and nothing! Will check again later and bleed the pipes at the weekend. It's getting parked up now anyway and switching back to my day to day car.

Aye, sort of. Or water glugging or plopping as it flows through a funnel. It's a really hard noise to describe! And it only seems to do it after i turn the engine off. I will still bleed the system etc at the weekend. Oil and water both look fine and I am bot losing water.

No, it wasn't a continuous noise like that, when it first happened I though it was the car next to me rubbing it's tyres on the curb, and stopping and starting as it went. As said its such a hard noise to describe!

Just thinking... We had a hell of a lot of rain last night, I wonder if it could be connected. Although I did drive about 5 miles before I heard the noise so if there was anything filling with water I would expect it to have emptied before then?
