ok so after replacing many parts including a head and 2 sets of tappets the car is sounding good seems to be running well and will pull on hills. but i had a strange noise like a rattle ish sound and then my clutch peddle dropped to about 2 inches from the floor but was still working! pulled over thinking i must have gone through the fork and its jammed part way down. however got back in pulled up the peddle with my foot to see what it would do and its been fine since (driven about 10 miles since not heard a think not had an issue).

any ideas and thanks in advance guys

Broken or weak return spring on the clutch pedal.

i've not long put the head and stuff back on this was on a test drive for the engine so the window was open when it happened. sounded like it cam from the engine bay ish area! and was like a quick crunch ish sound then a 2 or 3 second rattle then silence. clutch was then down to about 2inch from the floor (the hole peddle) and it stayed there for about half a mile until i pulled over to check things no signs of fluid loss or anything broken pulled the peddle back up and all was good again. i was thinking master cylinder but i dont see how that can make the noise it made.

Is the engine still starting/running ok? (Just asked that question on your other thread)
From what you have described it may have munched something in the clutch, release bearing, throwout fork, diaphragm fingers, but you say it it is working again ok.
It's times like this that a "view port" into the bell housing would be usefull.
I said the clutch pedal return spring because my daughter's Transit van had the same sort of problem with the clutch a while back, a new spring fixed it.

yeah its a little bit of an odd one the clutch feels as good now as it did before it went just finding it hard to match a sound to the issue especially when i cant really fit a description to the sound. i thought the fork but then i also thought if it was that then the clutch would have stayed low until it finally give up all together. done probley about 20 miles since it happened now and still all seems fine. also if something came off/broke/snapped/crunched up where have the parts gone that were rattling for a few seconds.

They will fling about in the confines of the bell housing for a bit, (the noise), then find a niche somewhere out of the way, my mates 300tdi, an auto, exploded the flex plate creating a fair noise but continued to drive got him home and never made another noise whilst it was still in there, he removed it a bit later and was amazed the thing was still going with so much damage and would still start/run.

well its got a 150 mile round trip with me the mrs and the kids this weekend so fingers crossed either someone will pop in with a i had that noise and symptom it was the ...........
or its getting driven as is and cross my fingers lol.

managed the trip well however since getting back i have a small update on my clutch issue that someone might make sense of. i was reversing out of a lane to let someone passed so put it in gear and started to come off the clutch. it started to bite and move then next inch or so of the peddle did nothing and all of a sudden the clutch seemed to jump release. so i guess my thought now is could this be the fork or bearing sticking! and if so anyone know whats best to do about it!
