Strange clicking from Engine and smoke.

to me it sounds like the engine's misfiring when the 'click' is heard ..
that plus black smoke .. ???????????? ..
it puffs smoke at the same time as the 'click' noise ( towards end of vid )
bit clattery for cr.diesel .. maybe it's just the sound recording ..

shouldn't be smoking like that ..

has it been 'tuned' at all ? .. i.e. tuning module or remap ? ..

evidently common-rail failing injectors can 'click' ..
( other forums talk .. bmw .. vw .. etc .. )
though never heard one myself ..
wouldn't have thought it be that loud ..

Its diesel so if there's fuel in the cylinders at the right time its going to fire. Assuming its a misfire, and the smoke is unburnt fuel, that means fuel is being pumped in at the wrong point.

So, either the ECU is getting its timing wrong from the crank/cam (?) sensor, or the message from the ECU isn't getting to the injectors - which would point to the host of lots of problems - the injector loom.

So which one would be most likely to give a problem on pulling away? I'd think sensors are unlikely, more likely the loom which is flexing as the engine rocks.

Assuming its a misfire, and the smoke is unburnt fuel, that means fuel is being pumped in at the wrong point.

that last 'run' .. click / misfire .. in time with puffs of white smoke ..
( wrote 'black' before .. may have been shadow on the vid )
it clicks under load .. not when free revving off-load ..

i'm betting 10p on a fuel system issue ..
'n 20p on that it's a screwed injector ..

not going to view vid. again ..
only so many times i can stand to hear a diesel being revved off-load ..
if a mechanic did that to mine i'd have a few choice words with them ;-)
( sorry .. old school hgv experience talking
( maybe the modern diesel lumps can take it these days ..

Did this issue ever get resolved? Our freelander is doing exactly the same thing. It's been to 2 mechanics and each time it comes back it's fine for a couple weeks but then the problem comes back worse than ever.

Tightened an injector and replaced a cracked hose. The vehicle had a full service when the loose injector was discovered. I got a friend to look it over and he has said the vehicle hadn't been serviced as the oil was old and when he opened the valve that leads to the injectors, it was clogged with gunk which he said was causing the fault. It's run better this week but is due to go back to my friend who will do a full service including cleaning the pipes so hopefully this will give us more answers to what's going on.

sounds possibly like it had been neglected by its previous owner
maybe the fuel sedimenter had never been drained ..
*have a read of the thread "why injectors fail" ( its about fuel quality / common rail diesels )*

that "gunk" could be anything .. fuel deposits .. diesel bacteria .. ( 'diesel bug' .. google it )
you could use a good fuel additive ( and keep using it )
although it won't fix any damage already done ..

i've only come across 1 additive that touches all bases
cleaning the fuel system
adding lubricating agents
combating water-in-fuel
getting rid of diesel bacteria

and that's "diesel rhino" ( google it )

it's somewhat cheaper than using 'premium diesel fuels'

common rail fuel systems are prone to a shortish lifespan if the fuel is not absolutely clean and free of contaminants
always use a quality fuel filter
