So with the Y piece, it is really a requirement to bring the two banks together shortly after the headers? If I go 4-2-1 on each side, bring the banks together into a 3" pipe and then split them out again, will that do the job?

I don't have an ECU so hopefully any adjustments that are necessary can be done by re-jetting the carb.

If you really want to run two pipes then use a balance or "H" pipe between the two, say 2.5" for each main pipe and 2" for the balance, even 1.5" maybe...

OK - that makes sense now. Thanks for the advice. I'm not necessarily set on the 2 pipes but its a bit unusual and sounds like a fun thing to try!

I would have enjoyed it myself but it's hard work negotiating the chassis and transmission etc.

As an off roader you dont want the exhaust under the chassis line as it will be destroyed in no time, and with the transfer case in the way it only leaves one route through.

Other option is fairly major chassis mods to allow the pipes to pass through...

Now there's a thought... Do you think if you cut a 4" hole in the rear chassis and welded a pipe in its place for the exhaust to pass through that would be as strong. Usually in a box section that preserves the strength. Alternatively you could weld the pipe itself in and then put flexible pipe either side to mount it to the rest of the system.

With a new chassis to buy anything is possible! Ho hum and the project extends in length by another year!

yeah it would be no problem to cut a hole and weld a tube in. dont use that tube as the exhaust, always run a separate pipe through it (noise and vibration would be awful otherwise)

also chop the chassis about and box it back up/add extra plate to the sides.

as long as it looks like it will be strong enough it will be.

best option is to go straight through with hole saw and weld a tube in. probably stronger than standard.

i did consider it to get the ultimate v8 sound but had to get practical: extra pipes = extra cost, extra work and most importantly extra weight. as such i had a custom system made to meet my Hedman headers, 2.5" throughout, with Y and single back, centre box only.

tis very lovely!
