They won't be allowed to be sold in Europe so it'd have to be a personal import subject to a sva test

It's mostly farmers and businesses that buy them new so it's unlikely they'll go to all the hassle of importing them so I think they'll be pretty much dead in the uk

Plus foreign buyers buy things because they're British , once it's not British made they lose interest

Prime example, Dr Martens Airwair all used to be made in northants, they shut the factories and moved it all to India

Once the US found out they weren't British made they stopped buying them so they had to re open a factory

Strange as it may seem British Niche products are still seen as a quality product in other parts of the world , HiFi, shoes etc

Once the EU starts sticking it's oar in all that gets ####ed up

Vote UKIP lol

i doubt it ,it will shift the icon from british to foreign build ,the rest will follow eventually

Lol british vehicle rebuilt with chinese parts lol is a britpart allmakes bearmach defender chenglish

There's no need to worry about the ole tratter being moved to India. There's a new plastic tratter out soon if the press is to be believed. :)

not from factory though, though perhaps many foreign parts as a good few seem to have lost pride and the bollocks to keep british jobs and manufacturing

I love my fender but its nineteen forties design with nineteen seventies build quality. If they want to build it in india for the third world market then off you go. The british motor industry will be relegated to building tons of hi tech nissans and hondas. Shame.
What would be briliant is if they ditched the tranny engine and reinstated the more reliable and thirdworld friendly 300tdi.

the wheel barrow is fairly old design as well ,but for the job they are designed for its still relavent

No, it's a disgrace in my book.

As others have mentioned, a drip, drip, drip of manufacturing from here to India will occur- no I'm not talking about in 5 years-we know that investments have been made at plants here, so for the foreseeable LR will be produced here. But if the defender becomes as Indian as curry, then the rest of LR will too in time.

I frankly am proud of this country's heritage-motoring and otherwise, and hate to see things unnecessarily go down the Swanee.

To all those nay sayers- it was born here, lives here and with a little help from the Drs could reside here for a long time yet.

Im not sure where you've been for the last fifty years, almost all of our manufacturing has already been moved to the far east! In fact there are signs that this process is beginning to slow down, or even reverse.

As you will know if you have read any of my posts, I too am very proud of our motoring and engineering heritage, I have spent all my life playing with it!

I don't see why it would not be possible to import Indian landies, Enfield motorbikes are imported?

And IMO the reason the Def is stopping production is simply a matter of business economics. They just don't sell enough units now to be viable.

Funny that.

I heard that a lot of it was down to those unelected B'stards in Brussels unreasonably tightening up the power/weight/emissions ratio of vehicles!

Audi, BMW, and all of the other EU manufacturers seem to have got an exemption!

I wonder why??

Its a factor, but if they sold 100,000 units a year they would invest to meet standards. They actually sell about 16,000 units a year, I think.

Parrently they sell about 19,000 fenders a year but they need to sell about 50,000 for it to be profitable. Be patriotic if you must but you can't expect any business to keep making something that loses money hand over fist. It don't matter to me anyway I've got one of the proper Fenders without any of the nasty modern electronics and I shall be keeping it.

IIRC its an average across the range of vehicles they produce, hence the A1, BMW 1 series (and their electric I3? thingy), even aston martain launched a supermini.

landrover dont make a supermini, they're all SUV style vehicles, which seem to be getting bigger and bigger.
They launched a 2WD version of the Ewok, and are cutting the Fender to try and reduce their CO2 average.

The Fender has already had its last rites read a few years ago when they swapped it from being registered as a car to commercial to bypass some of the safety EU guff for a while. :(

19k then, I was reading about it the other day, memry was 16.

With you hundred percent, only Ive got a 90, even better :) The rot started when they introduced models, real landies just have wheelbases :D

This is a bit like vw and the factory in Mexico after the manufacturing stopped in Europe.

Meant the beetle lived on for another 30odd years. During the time abroad was updated, fuel injection engine, better brakes etc as part of continual development albeit in a different country and slower.

I used to be a vw enthusiast - it meant that plenty of good quality genuine parts stayed available for a long long time, I am talking things like body panels etc

Me personally if the choices are:

- stop defender production completely in Europe and build it in India
- stop defender production everywhere

I am sorry but I would let the Indian chaps takeover.

+1 gets my vote
no other way, this will ensure the defender lives on for many years to come

It's OK moaning about it, but how many of us have bought a new Defender?

They can't continue producing what we don't buy. Good move I say, at least it'll keep a supply of parts available for many years .. :)

Shame they can't, however, keep a smaller niche market production line going 'here', keep it all British .. If I had the money I'd buy two, one for use, one for investment and mothball it ..
