 Some fecker broke the fuel cap off the 300tdi last night and has drained all the diesel...its bone dry according to the guage :mad:

Will the system self bleed if i throw 10 litres in and crank it or do i need to do it?

Bastids!

To make it easier on the battery,I would spin off f/filter and brim it with fuel before you crank her over.
Hard luck on the theft

If they have broken the cap off then they wont have got every drop out, the definitly wouldnt have drained your lines, just throw some in and start it

As bio says . It will self prime but it takes some power and time to do it so give it a little help and fill the filter then bleed it of with the lift pump and you should be good to go ....

...however , as JG says , if it it is not truly bone dry then it should be a case of fuel up and try it . So if doesnt fire up straight away then go to the above .

This fuel theft thing is getting common , down here its happening to peoples heating oil . A lot of houses run on it as we dont have much of a piped gas network . You go out to work and come home to a cold house and an empty tank . Considering it can cost 750 to 1k to fill a tank, thats a lot of theft . Obviously transport yards are getting hit and there are few farms that havent had some kind of incursion by undesireables .

The last time I remember widespread theft of fuel from cars was in the thatcher years . I recall a bit of an outburst in the early 90s but nothing like as widespread as now .

I am sincerely sorry to hear that this has happened to you .

thievin bastids ! they,ll nick anything . Lead flashings are being ripped of everywhere aswell. I only put 20 ltrs in at the pump and that costs about £28 so wouldn,t like to loose a full 90ltr tank

Although I heartily dislike running on the dregs of my fuel tank I only put 20 or 30 poundsworth at most in unless I am setting out for a long journey .

When I lived in bristol some years ago , we (myself and colleagues) made a habit of only having a couple of poundsworth of fuel in when parked up for the night . That way if stolen the vehicle could only travel so far and you had a good chance of finding it . Which we did on the two occasions it happened . However, the thieves were spiteful - when they couldnt start my lorry after breaking into our locked yard , they took the parking brake off so that it rolled out of the yard and over a 6ft drop into someones back garden
