Right, I think I've got a grip of this now. On the new replacement vehicle we are now looking at we will need to fit: a disk lock for the steering wheel, a clutch claw, a tracker and my husband is setting up a secondary battery to run an alarm as we think the people that stole the last one must have just cut through the main power cable to the car to disable all power, including that to the alarm.
We have cut down the hedge to below waist height so car is visible from the road, are getting new gates and a good £50+ padlock for them.
I don't think putting a post in will be workable, as the shape of the drive would mean they could manouvre around it unless it was in the gate way itself and we are struggling there because of drains! Chaining it up, I just can't face, the thought of having to crawl about it my work suit unchaining the thing before I could use it is too much to bear! It is bad enough that is stinks of horses every time I get in.

(Sorry, my husband is a riding insructor, he hasn't got some kind of strange fetishes!).

Have I thought of everything?

You can change gear using engine revs alone. Going up the gearbox is a doddle. Coming back down the box is harder. After the snow we had in january 2010 my truck batteries were flat, the starter motor was knackered, the air brakes were locked on and when I wound the rear brakes off and went to bump start it the clutch master cylinder turned inside out too. :doh:

I still managed to bump start it in reverse, reverse it into a nearby carpark and drive it around while still in reverse until the gearbox oil had heated up enough to make gear changes possible. I then managed to switch it from reverse gear to second by stamping on the brakes and then changing gear as the vehicle came to a halt. I then successfully got it the 11 miles back to my depot for repairs to be undertaken. I have driven stupid amounts of miles in vehicles with no clutch pedal, often while towing vehicles up 3.5 ton too.

For the rest of these lowly thieves I think this device should work, the won't know it's there till it's too late and they can't put it into gear because the clutch pedal won't come up... or I could fit it to the brakes and see what comes off worse my landy or thieves..
