Having replaced the head gaskets on my p38 4.0
It's still says its over heating but when you turn it off and back on straght away the temp goes straght back to the middle. iv have the car sitting still for 45mins and it dint overheat with the air con fans wired to be on all the time.

I this sounds like its got an air lock in there some-wear. but i have bleeded the cooling system alot runing engine with cap off wilst sqizing the pipes and reving it up. iv also ripped the middle of the thromstat out.

my questions are.

could this be a slipped liner/cracked block letting air in to the system.

could the missing air con rad be making it over heat some how.(didnt have one when i brought the car)

Or could there still be air in the some how/ getting in from some wear

Also its not using any water atall, no steam from exhaust, no coolent mixing, no bubbles in the expansion tank, iv flushed the rad as well and run water through the whole system there no blockages. iv red and herd the that the 4.0 is not as prone the slipped linners as the4.6.

Did you follow the refilling of coolant exactly as per rave? You need to ensure the small pipe between the rad and expansion bottle is clear by blowing any residual water out as air is expelled through this pipe as you fill the system. Also suggest filling the system slowly giving the air a chance to exit as it fills. Could be an airlock due to not doing this procceedure correctly.
